Cervicitis

What is it?

Cervicitis (sir-vih-si-tis) is an infection in your cervix (bottom part of your uterus). The uterus is also called the womb. This infection can cause the cervix to become red and swollen. Cervicitis is a common female infection often spread during sex. If cervicitis is not treated, it may lead to serious problems. And, it can cause damage that may make it hard for you to get pregnant later.

Causes:

Germs called bacteria (bak-teer-e-uh) or viruses (vi-russ-es) may cause cervicitis. An IUD (intra-uterine device), a forgotten tampon or chemicals in douches may also cause cervicitis. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like gonorrhea, chlamydia, or herpes may be another cause.

Signs and Symptoms:

You may have yellow, smelly fluid coming from the vagina. You may also have vaginal bleeding, itching, or pain during sex. Burning when you urinate may also occur. Or you may have abdominal (belly) or lower back pain.

Care:

Caregivers will do a pelvic exam (an "internal") to look inside your vagina. A sample of your vaginal fluid will be taken and sent for tests. You and your sex partner may need to take antibiotic (an-ti-bi-ah-tik) medicine to kill the germs causing cervicitis.
