Anal Itching

What is it?

Anal itching is also called rectal itching. It is itching in and around the anus (rear end). The anus is where you have a BM. Anal itching is common and not usually serious. But anal itching may be very painful.

Causes:

Some causes of anal itching may be a skin tear, soap allergy, or clothing that bothers your skin. An infection may cause anal itching, such as worms. BM that has not been washed from your skin may cause itching. The skin around your anus may be sore because of wiping too hard with toilet paper when using the bathroom.

Another cause of itching may be using perfumed toilet paper or having a skin infection. Or the itching may be caused by another illness. Hemorrhoids (hem-roids) are swollen rectal veins that cause itching.

Signs and Symptoms:

You may have itching in or around the anus. The itching may be worse at night. Or the skin around your anus may be red and swollen.

Care:

Treatment of anal itching depends upon what is causing the problem. Gently wipe your anus well with toilet paper after having a BM. Use soap and water to wash between your legs each day. Dry this area well after washing. Wear cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothes. Do not use soaps or perfumes in the anal area that may bother your skin.
