Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Treatment

  • Treatment

Seek immediate medical evaluation if you have sudden vision problems, difficulty walking, and/or muscular jerking.

Your doctor is the best source of information on the drug treatment choices available to you.

Because patients soon lose the ability to care for themselves, supportive care by family, friends, and health care teams is necessary.

The disease is inevitably fatal. Death usually occurs within a year of onset. While the incubation period of CJD can be from 1 to 30 years, patients usually die within months of the clinical onset of the disease. However, patients have lived for up to 5 years after onset of symptoms. Scientists are trying to learn what causes variations in the course of the disease.

Since the patient loses all mental and physical function in the final stages of the disease, hospitalization is usually recommended.
