What is Ak-Con?Ak-Con is an eye drop medicine used for narrowing of the blood vessels to relieve irritation, blurring, or redness of your eye.
What is the most important information I should know about Ak-Con?Ak-Con is for use in your eyes only.
People who take monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), a class of drugs used to treat depression and other psychiatric conditions (such as phenelzine), with Ak-Con can experience a severely high blood pressure.
Use in children, especially infants, can result in severe low brain function (leading to coma) or a reduction in body temperature.
Stop using Ak-Con and tell your doctor if the irritation, blurring, or redness of your eye is not relieved within 48 hours of therapy or worsens after starting Ak-Con, or if you experience dizziness, headache, nausea, decrease in body temperature, or drowsiness.
Who should not take Ak-Con?Do not use Ak-Con if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients, or if you have narrow-angle glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Ak-Con?Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Ak-Con. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have narrow-angle glaucoma, high blood pressure, heart or blood vessel abnormalities, diabetes, hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland), infections, or injury.
What is the usual dosage?The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.
Adults: Apply 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 3-4 hours as needed.
How should I take Ak-Con?Apply Ak-Con exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
What should I avoid while taking Ak-Con?Do not allow the dropper tip of the bottle to contact any surface, your eyelids, or the surrounding area, as this can contaminate Ak-Con.
Do not use Ak-Con if the solution changes color or becomes cloudy.
What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Ak-Con?If Ak-Con is used with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Ak-Con with the following: certain antidepressants (such as maprotiline) or MAOIs.
What are the possible side effects of Ak-Con?Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.
Side effects may include: dilated pupils in your eyes, dizziness, drowsiness, increased blurring of your eyes, increased irritation or redness of your eyes, increased pressure in your eyes, headache, heart irregularities, high blood pressure, high blood sugar level, nausea, nervousness, secretion of tears, sweating, weakness
Can I receive Ak-Con if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?The effects of Ak-Con during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
What should I do if I miss a dose of Ak-Con?Ak-Con should be given only as needed.
How should I store Ak-Con?Store at room temperature. Keep container tightly closed.
