Augmentin ES-600

Generic Name: Amoxicillin

  • What is Augmentin ES-600?

Augmentin ES-600 is an oral antibiotic used to treat certain stubborn ear infections in children 2 years and under (or those attending daycare) that previous treatment failed to clear up.

  • What is the most important information I should know about Augmentin ES-600?

Antibiotics, including Augmentin ES-600, should only be used to treat bacterial infections. They do not treat viral infections (e.g., the common cold or flu).

If your child is allergic to either penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics in any form, consult your doctor before starting treatment with Augmentin ES-600. If an allergic reaction occurs, it could be extremely severe. If your child takes the drug and exhibits any signs of a reaction, seek medical attention immediately.

Although it is common to feel better early in the course of therapy, the medication should be taken exactly as directed. Skipping doses or not completing the full course of therapy may decrease the effectiveness of the immediate treatment, and increase the likelihood that bacteria will develop resistance and will not be treatable by Augmentin ES-600 or other antibacterial drugs in the future.

If diarrhea develops and is severe or lasts more than 2 or 3 days, call your doctor.

  • Who should not take Augmentin ES-600?

If your child is sensitive to or has ever had an allergic reaction to any penicillin medication, he or she should not take this drug.

Anyone with a previous history of liver problems should not take Augmentin ES-600.

  • What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Augmentin ES-600?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications your child is taking before beginning treatment with Augmentin ES-600. Also, talk to your doctor about your child's complete medical history, especially a penicillin allergy or liver disorder.

  • What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Children ≥3 months and older: The recommended dose is 90 milligrams (mg) per 2.2 pounds of body weight per day divided every 12 hours, administered for 10 days. Patients with liver impairment should be dosed with caution and their liver function monitored at regular intervals.

  • How should I take Augmentin ES-600?

Augmentin ES-600 should be taken every 12 hours with a meal or snack to reduce the possibility of stomach upset. Keep the suspension refrigerated. Shake well before using. When dosing a child with Augmentin ES-600, use a dosing spoon or medicine dropper. Be sure to rinse the spoon or dropper after each use.

  • What should I avoid while taking Augmentin ES-600?

To prevent bacterial resistance, avoid missing doses and not completing the full dosage schedule your doctor has prescribed.

  • What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Augmentin ES-600?

If Augmentin ES-600 is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Augmentin ES-600 with the following: allopurinol, birth control pills, and probenecid.

  • What are the possible side effects of Augmentin ES-600?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: diarrhea/loose stools, nausea, skin rashes, hives

  • Can I receive Augmentin ES-600 if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of Augmentin ES-600 during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

  • What should I do if I miss a dose of Augmentin ES-600?

If your child misses a dose of Augmentin ES-600, give the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

  • How should I store Augmentin ES-600?

Store the suspension in the refrigerator and discard the unused part after 10 days.
