  • What is Augmentin XR?

    Augmentin XR is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections of the lung or sinuses. It may also be used to treat other bacterial infections, as determined by your doctor.

  • What is the most important information I should know about Augmentin XR?

    Do not take Augmentin XR if you are allergic to it or other similar antibiotics (such as penicillin or cephalosporins). Tell your doctor immediately if you take Augmentin XR and you feel signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing.

    Augmentin XR can cause diarrhea or colitis (inflammation of the colon). This can occur a couple of months after taking the last dose of Augmentin XR. Tell your doctor immediately if you have diarrhea or colitis.

    Take Augmentin XR as prescribed by your doctor for the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve earlier. Do not skip doses. Skipping doses or not completing the full course of Augmentin XR can decrease its effectiveness and can lead to the growth of bacteria that are resistant to the effects of Augmentin XR.

  • Who should not take Augmentin XR?

    Do not take Augmentin XR if you are allergic to it, any of its ingredients, or other penicillin antibiotics; if you have a history of jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes) or liver impairment associated with previous treatment with Augmentin; or have severe kidney impairment or are receiving hemodialysis.

    Do not take Augmentin XR if you have mononucleosis (a viral illness commonly referred to as "mono" that results in weakness and fatigue for weeks or months). This can increase your risk of getting a skin rash.

    Do not take Augmentin XR to treat viral infections, such as the common cold.

  • What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Augmentin XR?

    Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Augmentin XR. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have allergies, blood disorders, kidney or liver problems, "mono," or infections.

  • What is the usual dosage?

    The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

    Sinus Infection

    Adults and children ≥40 kg: The recommended dose is 2 tablets every 12 hours for 10 days.

    Lung Infections

    Adults and children ≥40 kg: The recommended dose is 2 tablets every 12 hours for 7-10 days.

    Take Augmentin XR exactly as prescribed by your doctor. You can take Augmentin XR at the start of a meal or with a snack to help reduce the possibility of stomach upset.

    Do not skip or miss any scheduled doses.

  • What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Augmentin XR?

    If Augmentin XR is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Augmentin XR with the following: allopurinol, birth control pills, blood thinners (such as warfarin), or probenecid.

    Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

    Side effects may include: agitation, allergic reactions, anxiety, confusion, diarrhea, dizziness, face edema (swelling), headache, indigestion, itching, loose stools, nausea, rash, tooth discoloration, vaginal infection, vomiting

  • Can I receive Augmentin XR if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

    The effects of Augmentin XR during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Augmentin XR can be found in your breast milk if you take it during breastfeeding. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

  • What should I do if I miss a dose of Augmentin XR?

    If you miss a dose of Augmentin XR, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.

    Store at room temperature.
