  • What is Axiron?

    Axiron is a topical solution medicine (applied directly to the skin) that contains testosterone. It is available as a metered-dose pump. Axiron is used to treat men who have low or no testosterone.

  • What is the most important information I should know about Axiron?

    Axiron can transfer from your body to others, if other people come into contact with the area where you applied Axiron.

    Women and children should avoid contact with the unwashed or unclothed area where Axiron has been applied. If a woman or child makes contact with the Axiron application area, the contact area on the woman or child should be washed well with soap and water immediately.

  • Who should not take Axiron?

    Do not use Axiron if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients, or if you have known or suspected prostate cancer or breast cancer.

    Women should not use Axiron.

  • What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Axiron?

    Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Axiron. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have a history of or are suspected of having breast or prostate cancer, heart disease, sleep apnea (stopping breathing temporarily during sleep), liver or kidney disease.

  • What is the usual dosage?

    The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

    Adults: Apply 60 milligrams (mg) (2 pump actuations) once a day. Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate dose for you based on your condition.

  • How should I take Axiron?

    Apply the Axiron solution to the armpits only. Do not apply it to any other parts of your body, such as your stomach area (abdomen), penis, scrotum (the sac located behind the penis), shoulders, or upper arms.

    Apply Axiron in the morning, after you shower or bathe. Do not swim, shower, or bathe for at least 2 hours after you apply Axiron.

    Axiron is flammable until dry. Let Axiron dry before smoking or going near an open flame.

    Before using Axiron for the first time, you will need to prime the pump. To prime the pump, gently push down on the pump 3 times. Do not use any Axiron that comes out while priming. Wash it down the sink or throw it in the trash to avoid accidental exposure to others.

    Depress the pump to apply the medicine to an armpit that is clean, dry, and has no broken skin. Apply using an applicator, not your fingers or hands. You can use an antiperspirant or deodorant at least 2 minutes before applying Axiron. Wash your hands with soap and water immediately after you apply Axiron. Let the application areas dry for a few minutes before putting on clothing.

  • What should I avoid while taking Axiron?

    Do not accidentally expose women or children to Axiron.

    Do not apply Axiron to any other parts of your body, such as your stomach area, penis, scrotum, shoulders, or upper arms.

    Do not splash Axiron in your eyes. If this happens, flush thoroughly with water.

  • What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Axiron?

    If Axiron is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Axiron with the following: anticoagulants (blood thinners, such as warfarin); corticosteroids (medicine that helps fight inflammation, such as prednisone); or insulin.

  • What are the possible side effects of Axiron?

    Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

    Side effects may include: application-site irritation or redness, diarrhea, headache, vomiting

  • Can I receive Axiron if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

    Axiron is intended for use only by men and must not be used by women. If used during pregnancy, it can cause serious harm to the developing baby.

  • What should I do if I miss a dose of Axiron?

    If you miss a dose of Axiron, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply two doses at once.

  • How should I store Axiron?

    Store at room temperature.
