  • What is the usual dosage?

    The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

    Adults: The recommended adult dose is 240 milliliters (8 fluid ounces) every 10 minutes. Cleansing is complete when the bowels run clear. This usually requires drinking 3 to 4 liters of liquid.

  • How should I take Colyte?

    Colyte powder is available in unflavored form, pre-flavored, or unflavored with four separate flavor packs (citrus berry, lemon lime, cherry, and pineapple). The powder should be dissolved in 4 liters of water. If you buy it in the 4-liter jug, simply add tap water to the fill line. (When using a flavor pack, add the contents to the Colyte powder and shake thoroughly before adding water.)

    You should not add anything else—flavorings, for example—to the Colyte solution.

    Do not eat for 3 to 4 hours before drinking Colyte. You can drink clear liquids between taking Colyte and receiving the examination.

    You should drink 8 ounces of Colyte every 10 minutes. It is best to drink it fast, all at once. The first bowel movement should occur in about 1 hour. Continue to drink Colyte until the watery stool is clear. This usually requires drinking 3 to 4 quarts.

  • What should I avoid while taking Colyte?

    Do not eat for 3 to 4 hours before drinking Colyte.
  • What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Colyte?

    Any oral medication taken after you have started drinking Colyte may be flushed out of your system before it can be absorbed.
  • What are the possible side effects of Colyte?

    Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

    Side effects may include: abdominal fullness, bloating, nausea

  • Can I receive Colyte if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

    The effects of Colyte during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. The drug should be used only if clearly needed.
  • What should I do if I miss a dose of Colyte?

    Take Colyte only as required for medical exams.
  • How should I store Colyte?

    Store the powder at room temperature. Once Colyte has been mixed with water, it should be stored in the refrigerator and used within 48 hours. Throw out the unused portion.
