What is Esgic-Plus?Esgic-Plus is a medicine used to relieve the symptoms associated with tension (or muscle contraction) headaches. Esgic-Plus contains three medications: butalbital, acetaminophen, and caffeine.
What is the most important information I should know about Esgic-Plus?Esgic-Plus is habit-forming and has abuse potential. Mental and physical dependence can occur with the use of Esgic-Plus when it is used for long periods of time. Do not take this medication at higher doses or more frequently than prescribed by your doctor.
Esgic-Plus contains acetaminophen, which can cause severe liver injury. Do not take more than 4,000 milligrams (mg) of acetaminophen per day or take other products containing acetaminophen. The risk of liver injury can be higher if you have underlying liver disease or drink alcohol while taking Esgic-Plus.
Esgic-Plus can cause a severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis (a serious and rapid allergic reaction that may result in death if not immediately treated). Stop taking this medication and tell your doctor immediately if you experience swelling of the face, mouth, or throat; difficulty breathing; rash; itchiness; or vomiting.
Who should not take Esgic-Plus?Do not take Esgic-Plus if you are allergic to it, any of its ingredients, or if you have porphyria (a blood disorder that interferes with how your body produces heme, which is the oxygen carrying component of your red blood cells).
What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Esgic-Plus?Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Esgic-Plus. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have porphyria, liver or kidney disease, or abdominal problems.
What is the usual dosage?The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.
Adults and adolescents ≥12 years: The recommended dose is 1 tablet or capsule every 4 hours as needed.
How should I take Esgic-Plus?Take Esgic-Plus exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more than 6 tablets or capsules of Esgic-Plus in one day.
What should I avoid while taking Esgic-Plus?Do not drink alcohol while you are taking Esgic-Plus.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Esgic-Plus?If Esgic-Plus is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Esgic-Plus with the following: alcohol, certain painkillers (such as morphine or oxycodone), or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), a class of drugs used to treat depression and other psychiatric conditions (such as phenelzine), or other medications that slow down your brain function (such as alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide, or phenobarbital).
What are the possible side effects of Esgic-Plus?Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.
