  • What is this medication?

    Kaopectate contains an anti-diarrheal/upset stomach reliever. It is intended for the relief of diarrhea, nausea, and upset stomach associated with nausea.
  • Are there any warnings associated with Kaopectate?

    Children and teenagers who have chicken pox or flu-like symptoms, or are recovering from them, should not use this product. If changes in behavior with nausea or vomiting develop when using this product, consult a doctor because these could be early signs of Reye's syndrome, a rare but serious illness.

    This product contains salicylate. Do not take Kaopectate if you are allergic to salicylates, including aspirin, or if you are taking other salicylate products.

    Do not use this product if you have an ulcer, bloody or black stool, or a bleeding problem.

    Stop using this product and talk to a doctor if your symptoms get worse, diarrhea lasts more than 2 days, or ringing in the ears or hearing loss occurs.

    When using this product a temporary, but harmless, darkening of the stool and/or tongue may occur.

    Drink plenty of clear fluids to help prevent dehydration due to diarrhea.

    Keep out of the reach of children. In case of an overdose, get medical help or contact a poison control center immediately.

    Do not use this product if the inner seal is broken or missing.

    Talk to a doctor before using this product if you have a fever or mucus in the stool.

    Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before using Kaopectate if you are taking any medications for anticoagulation (blood-thinning), diabetes, gout, or arthritis.

    Talk to a health professional before using this product if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

  • What are the possible side effects of Kaopectate?

    You may develop darkening of the tongue or stool when using this product, which is temporary and harmless.

    Side effects cannot always be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

    Do not use Kaopectate if you are taking other salicylate products.
  • What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Kaopectate?

    If Kaopectate is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Always check with your doctor before combining Kaopectate with any other medication.
  • What is the usual dosage of Kaopectate?

    Shake the product well before using. Use the pre-measured dose cup for dosing.

    Adults and children 12 years: ForKaopectate Vanilla or Kaopectate Cherry: Take 2 tablespoons (30 mL). Repeat the dose every 30 minutes to 1 hour as needed. Do not take more than 8 doses of in a 24-hour period. Use until diarrhea stops, but not for more than 2 days.

    For Kaopectate Peppermint: Take 2 tablespoons (30mL). Repeat dose every hour as needed. Do not exceed 4 doses in a 24-hour period. Use until diarrhea stops, but not more than 2 days.

    Children <12 years: Ask a doctor.
