  • What is Lamictal XR?

    Lamictal XR is used in combination with other medicines to treat certain types of seizures in adults and children 13 years and older.

  • What is the most important information I should know about Lamictal XR?

    Rarely, serious and possibly fatal skin rashes have been reported with the use of Lamictal XR. Although most patients who develop a rash while receiving Lamictal XR have mild to moderate symptoms, some individuals may develop a serious skin reaction that requires hospitalization. Because of this risk, it's important to contact your doctor immediately at the first sign of a rash. These serious skin reactions are most likely to happen within the first 2-8 weeks of treatment and occur more often in children than in adults; however, it can happen in people who have taken Lamictal XR for any period of time.

    Lamictal XR may cause other types of severe allergic reactions which may affect organs and other parts of your body like the liver or blood cells. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction such as fever, hives, rash, swelling of your lips or tongue, severe muscle pain or weakness, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

    Lamictal XR may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior. If you experience signs and symptoms of depression, unusual changes in mood or behavior, or thoughts of suicide, contact your doctor immediately.

    Lamictal XR may cause blood problems to develop. If you notice unusual bruising or bleeding, contact your doctor immediately.

    Do not stop taking Lamictal XR without consulting your doctor, as this can increase the risk of having a seizure.

    Let your doctor know if you plan to start or stop taking estrogen-containing birth control, since this can affect the amount of Lamictal XR in your body, which may require dose adjustments.

    Lamictal XR may cause severe drowsiness. You should not drive or operate dangerous machinery until you know how Lamictal XR affects you.

    Patients prescribed Lamictal XR have sometimes been given the wrong medicine because many medicines have names similar to Lamictal XR; always check that you receive Lamictal XR.

  • Who should not take Lamictal XR?

    Do not take Lamictal XR if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

  • What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Lamictal XR?

    Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Lamictal XR. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney, liver, or heart problems; if you are taking birth control pills or plan to start; if you have ever had an allergic reaction to another antiseizure medicine; if you have a blood disorder; or if you have a history of mood problems, thoughts of harming yourself, or suicide attempts. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

  • What is the usual dosage?

    The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

    Adults and children 13 years and older: Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate dosage for you.

  • How should I take Lamictal XR?

    Take Lamictal XR exactly as prescribed. You can take it with or without food. Swallow the tablets whole; do not chew, crush, or divide them.

  • What should I avoid while taking Lamictal XR?

    Do not stop taking Lamictal XR without talking to your doctor first. Stopping Lamictal XR suddenly may cause serious side effects.

    Do not start or stop taking oral contraceptives while taking Lamictal unless you have discussed with your doctor any dosage adjustments that might be necessary.

    Do not drive or operate dangerous machinery until you know how Lamictal XR affects you.

  • What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Lamictal XR?

    If Lamictal XR is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Lamictal XR with the following: carbamazepine, estrogen-containing birth control pills, medicines that inhibit folic acid metabolism, phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone, rifampin, topiramate, and valproate.

  • What are the possible side effects of Lamictal XR?

    Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

    Side effects may include: rash, blurred or double vision, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, tremor, abdominal pain, lack of coordination, back pain, sleepiness, tiredness, trouble sleeping.

    The most serious side effect of Lamictal XR is a rash that can be life-threatening. Contact your doctor immediately at the first sign of a rash.

  • Can I receive Lamictal XR if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

    The effects of Lamictal XR during pregnancy are unknown. Lamictal XR should be used during pregnancy only when clearly needed. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Since Lamictal XR may appear in breast milk, you should consult your doctor if you plan to breastfeed your baby.

  • What should I do if I miss a dose of Lamictal XR?

    If you miss a dose of Lamictal XR, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

  • How should I store Lamictal XR?

    Store Lamictal XR tablets at room temperature away from moisture and light.
