Lysteda

Generic Name: Tranexamic

  • What is Lysteda?

Lysteda is a medicine, containing no hormones, used to treat heavy monthly periods (menstruation) when bleeding gets in the way of social, leisure, and physical activities in women of reproductive age.

  • What is the most important information I should know about Lysteda?

Lysteda cannot be used as birth control, and it does not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases.

If Lysteda does not help to lessen bleeding with your periods after two cycles or seems to stop working, talk to your doctor. If you notice a change in your usual bleeding pattern that worries you, contact your doctor right away.

Lysteda may cause serious side effects such as blood clots, eye changes, and allergic reactions. The risk of blood clots is increased when Lysteda is taken with birth control, medicines to help blood clots, and some medicines used to treat leukemia. If you experience any eye changes, stop Lysteda and promptly report any eye problems to your doctor. If you have signs of an allergic reaction, such as severe shortness of breath and a tight feeling in your throat, stop Lysteda and get medical care right away.

  • Who should not take Lysteda?

Do not take Lysteda if you currently have, have ever had, or are at risk of having a blood clot. Do not take Lysteda if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

Girls who have not started menstruation should not take Lysteda.

  • What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Lysteda?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Lysteda. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have/are at risk of having blood clots, kidney problems, and if the time between the start of your periods is <21 days or >35 days.

  • What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults (women of reproductive age): Take two tablets three times a day during menstruation. Do not take more than six tablets a day and for longer than 5 days.

  • How should I take Lysteda?

Take Lysteda exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take Lysteda with liquids. Swallow tablets whole and do not chew or break apart. You may take Lysteda with or without food.

  • What should I avoid while taking Lysteda?

Do not take Lysteda until your period has started. Also, do not take Lysteda for >5 days in a row, and when you do not have your period.

  • What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Lysteda?

If Lysteda is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Lysteda with the following: birth control pills, blood clot medicines, hormonal products, or leukemia medicines (such as oral tretinoin).

  • What are the possible side effects of Lysteda?

  • Can I receive Lysteda if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Lysteda should not be used in pregnant women. Lysteda can pass into breast milk; talk to your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you take Lysteda. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
