What is Acular?

Acular relieves the itchy eyes brought on by seasonal allergies. It is also used to reduce inflammation after cataracts have been removed from the eyes.

What is the most important information I should know about Acular?

A history of reactions to other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like aspirin, makes a reaction to Acular more likely. Acular sometimes causes an inflammation of the cornea (the clear tissue over the pupil of the eye). This can lead to a sight-threatening breakdown of the cornea. Warning signs may include sensitivity to light and a sensation like a foreign body in the eye.

Acular may cause blood not to clot and may increase healing time after surgery.

Who should not take Acular?

Do not take Acular if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Acular?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Acular. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have diabetes, arthritis, dry eyes, or pre-existing corneal defects.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Itchy eyes

Adults: The usual dose is 1 drop 4 times a day.

After cataract surgery

The usual dose is 1 drop 4 times a day, beginning 24 hours after the operation and continuing for the first 2 weeks post surgery.

What should I avoid while taking Acular?

Do not apply Acular while wearing contact lenses. To avoid contamination, do not touch the eyedropper or single-use vial to the eye or any other surface.

What are the possible side effects of Acular?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: temporary stinging and burning when the drops are applied

Can I receive Acular if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of Acular during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Acular?

Apply the forgotten dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular schedule. Do not apply two doses at once.
