Astelin is a prescription nasal spray medicine. Astelin is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies in adults and children 5 years and older. Additionally, in people 12 years and older, it relieves symptoms caused by environmental irritants such as perfumes, cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes, chemical odors, and cold air. These symptoms include sneezing; itchy, runny, or stuffy nose; and postnasal drip.

Astelin may cause sleepiness, so it is not recommended to drive, operate machinery, or perform similar activities until you know how Astelin affects you.

Do not take Astelin if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Astelin?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Astelin. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, including all of your allergies, and if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis

Adults and children ≥12 years: The recommended dose of Astelin is one or two sprays per nostril twice a day.

Children 5 years to 11 years: The recommended dose of Astelin is one spray per nostril twice a day.

Vasomotor Rhinitis

Adults and children ≥12 years: The recommended dose of Astelin is two sprays per nostril twice a day.


How should I take Astelin?

Before initial use, the delivery system should be primed with 4 sprays or until a fine mist appears. When 3 or more days have elapsed since the last use, the pump should be re-primed with 2 sprays or until a fine mist appears. Spray Astelin into your nose.


What should I avoid while taking Astelin?

Avoid taking Astelin with other antihistamines without talking to your doctor first. Avoid alcohol or other medicine that may cause drowsiness. Avoid spraying Astelin into your eyes.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Astelin?

If Astelin is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining azelastine with the following: other antihistamines, alcohol or other CNS depressants, cimetidine, and ketoconazole.


What are the possible side effects of Astelin?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: bitter taste, drowsiness, headache, nasal inflammation/burning


Can I receive Astelin if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are nursing, before starting treatment with Astelin. The effects of this drug are unknown on pregnancy, and it may pass into breast milk.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Astelin?

If you miss a dose of Astelin, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.


How should I store Astelin?

Store at room temperature, in an upright position. Do not store in the freezer.
