What is Avodart?

Avodart is a medication for the treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Avodart is used in men with an enlarged prostate to improve symptoms and to reduce the risk of a complete blockage of urine flow and the need for BPH-related surgery. It may also be used in combination with an alpha blocker called tamsulosin for the treatment of symptomatic BPH in men with an enlarged prostate.

What is the most important information I should know about Avodart?

Women should never take or handle Avodart. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle Avodart capsules.

Men treated with Avodart should not donate blood until at least six months after their final dose to prevent transmitting the drug to a pregnant woman through a blood transfusion.

Who should not take Avodart?

Do not use Avodart if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Women and children should not take Avodart. A woman who is pregnant or capable of becoming pregnant should not handle Avodart capsules.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Avodart?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Avodart. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have/had liver problems.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The recommended dose of Avodart is 0.5 milligrams (mg) taken orally once a day.

How should I take Avodart?

The capsules should be swallowed whole. Avodart may be administered with or without food. You may find it helpful to take Avodart at the same time every day to help you remember to take your dose.

What should I avoid while taking Avodart?

Avoid giving blood during treatment and for at least six months after treatment with Avodart. Do not allow a pregnant woman to handle Avodart capsules, as they may be hazardous to her pregnancy.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Avodart?

If Avodart is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Avodart with cytochrome P450 3A inhibitors such as ritonavir.

What are the possible side effects of Avodart?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: decrease in sex drive, decrease in the amount of semen released during sex, hives, impotence (trouble getting or keeping an erection), itching, rash, swelling of the lips or face, swelling or tenderness of the breasts

Can I receive Avodart if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Women should not take Avodart. Also, avoid touching Avodart capsules if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are nursing. This drug may cause severe deformities in your unborn child.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Avodart?

If you miss a dose, you may take it later that day. Do not make up the missed dose by taking 2 doses the next day.

How should I store Avodart?

Store at room temperature.
