BuSpar is used to treat anxiety disorders or to relieve symptoms of anxiety.

BuSpar should not be used with antidepressant drugs known as monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine.

Until you know how this medication affects you, do not drive a car or operate potentially dangerous machinery.

During your treatment with BuSpar, avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice.

Do not take BuSpar if you are sensitive or allergic to it.

Anxiety or tension related to everyday stress usually does not require treatment with BuSpar. Discuss your symptoms thoroughly with your doctor.

BuSpar is not recommended if you have severe kidney or liver damage.

The safety and effectiveness of BuSpar have not been established in children younger than 18 years old.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of BuSpar?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with BuSpar. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you use alcohol, take MAOIs, or if you have kidney or liver damage.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The recommended initial dose is 15 milligrams (mg) daily divided into two doses. Your doctor may increase the dosage by 5 mg per day every 2-3 days. The maximum daily dose is 60 mg.


How should I take BuSpar?

Take BuSpar consistently at the same time. Always take it the same way; you can choose either to take it always with food or always without food.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with BuSpar?

If BuSpar is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either drug could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining BuSpar with the following: alcohol, blood thinners such as warfarin, haloperidol, MAOIs such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine, and trazodone.

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: dizziness, excitement, headache, lightheadedness, nausea, nervousness


Can I receive BuSpar if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of BuSpar during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Talk with your doctor before taking this drug if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.


What should I do if I miss a dose of BuSpar?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take two doses at the same time.
