What is Bumex?

Bumex is used to treat fluid retention associated with congestive heart failure and liver or kidney disease. It is also used with other drugs to treat high blood pressure.


What is the most important information I should know about Bumex?

Bumex is a powerful drug. If taken in excessive amounts, it can severely decrease the levels of water and minerals, especially potassium, your body needs to function. Your doctor should monitor your dose carefully.


Who should not take Bumex?

Do not use Bumex if you are sensitive to or allergic to this drug or to similar drugs. Do not use if you cannot produce urine, if you are dehydrated, or if you have severe liver disease.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Bumex?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medication you are taking before beginning treatment with Bumex. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you are allergic to sulfur-containing drugs such as sulfonamides (antibacterial drugs) or if you have liver disease.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

The usual total daily dose is 0.5-2 milligrams (mg) a day. If the initial dose is not adequate, your doctor may have you take a second and, possibly, a third dose at 4-5-hour intervals up to a maximum daily dose of 10 mg.

For the continuing control of fluid retention, your doctor may tell you to take Bumex every other day or for 3-4 days at a time with rest periods of 1-2 days in between.

The safety and effectiveness of Bumex has not been established in children less than 18 years of age.


How should I take Bumex?

Take Bumex in the morning after breakfast. If you take more than 1 dose a day, take the last dose no later than 6:00 PM.


What should I avoid while taking Bumex?

Bumex may make you feel dizzy, light-headed, or may cause you to faint. Avoid getting up quickly from a lying or seated position.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Bumex?

If Bumex is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Bumex with the following: blood pressure medications such as atenolol or enalapril, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as indomethacin, and probenecid.

Combining Bumex with certain antibiotics or cisplatin may increase the risk of hearing loss.

Because Bumex can lower potassium levels, the combination of Bumex and digoxin may increase the risk of changes in heartbeat.

The combination of Bumex with lithium may increase lithium levels in the body.


What are the possible side effects of Bumex?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: dizziness, headache, low blood pressure, muscle cramps, nausea

Bumex can cause a loss of potassium from the body. Your doctor may recommend foods or fluids high in potassium or may want you to take a potassium supplement to help prevent potassium loss. Follow your doctor's recommendation carefully.

Signs of severe potassium loss are dry mouth, irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps or pain, unusual tiredness or weakness.


Can I receive Bumex if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of Bumex during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Bumex?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time.


How should I store Bumex?
