What is Caverject?

Caverject is used to treat erection problems in adult men. It is given by injection into the side of the penis. Caverject should produce an erection in 5 to 20 minutes. The erection should last for no longer than 1 hour.

What is the most important information I should know about Caverject?

Caverject may cause erections that last for more than 4 hours (priapism). This incidence should be immediately reported to a doctor, as it may cause tissue damage and permanent impotence.

Caverject does not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), such as HIV. In addition, small amounts of bleeding at the injection site can increase the risk of passing diseases carried by the blood, such as HIV.

Who should not take Caverject?

Do not use Caverject if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Do not use Caverject if you have been advised not to have sex. It is not for men who have penis implants or an abnormally formed penis. Caverject should not be used by men with medical problems that can cause long-lasting erections—4 hours or more. These conditions include sickle cell anemia or trait, leukemia, and tumor of the bone marrow (multiple myeloma). Priapism requires immediate medical attention because permanent damage to the tissue of the penis and loss of potency may result.

Women and children should not use Caverject.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Caverject?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Caverject. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have a medical condition that may cause you to sustain an erection for more than 4 hours.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Vascular or Psychological Problems

Adults: The starting dose of Caverject is 2.5 micrograms (mcg). If there is only a partial response, the dosage may be increased by 2.5 mcg (for a total of 5mcg). If required, doses may be increased in increments of 5 to 10 mcg at least 24 hours apart until the dose that produces an erection suitable for intercourse and not exceeding 1 hour is reached.

Spinal Cord Injury

Adults: The starting dose of Caverject is 1.25 mcg. If there is only a partial response, the dosage may be increased by 1.25 mcg (for a total dose of 2.5 mcg). If required, a dose of 5 mcg can be given within the next 24 hours. After this, a dose of 5 mcg may be given every 24 hours until an erection suitable for intercourse is produced and does not exceed 1 hour.

The dose of Caverject will be individualized for each patient based on the observations of the prescriber.

The first injections of Caverject must be given at the physician's office by medically trained personnel. In order for you to self-administer the medication, you need to be properly instructed and well trained in the self-injection technique.

How should I take Caverject?

Caverject should be injected into the side of the penis, and should not be used more than 3 times per week. There must be at least 24 hours (1 day) between each dose. It should produce an erection in about 5 to 20 minutes that should last about 1 hour. You must be taught by your doctor how to inject before administering this drug to yourself.

What should I avoid while taking Caverject?

Avoid using Caverject more than 3 times per week. Injection should take place at least 24 hours after the last injection.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Caverject?

No significant interactions have been reported at this time. However, always tell your doctor about any medicines you take, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

What are the possible side effects of Caverject?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: abnormal ejaculation, back pain, dizziness, foreskin tightening, headache, injection site bleeding, injection site edema, injection site inflammation, injection site itching, injection site swelling, irritation, itchiness, numbness, painful erection, penile warmth, penis swelling, prolonged erection, redness, sensitivity, urethral bleeding, yeast infection

Can I receive Caverject if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Caverject is not for women or children.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Caverject?

Caverject is only used when necessary. Do not use Caverject less than 24 hours after a previous dose.

How should I store Caverject?

Store the powder at room temperature. Store the mixed injection (for 24 hours only) at room temperature or colder; do not freeze the mixture.
