What is Cefzil?

Cefzil is a cephalosporin antibiotic that is used to treat mild to moderately severe bacterial infections of the ear, respiratory tract, sinuses, skin, and throat.

If you are allergic to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics in any form, consult your doctor before taking Cefzil. You may be allergic to Cefzil, and if a reaction occurs it could be extremely severe. If you take the drug and feel signs of a reaction, seek medical attention immediately.


Who should not take Cefzil?

Do not take Cefzil if you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to this drug or to similar products.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Cefzil?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Cefzil. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you are diabetic, have kidney disease, or if you take oral contraceptives.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Bronchitis

Adults (≥13 years): 500 milligrams (mg) every 12 hours for 10 days.

Ear Infections

Infants and Children (6 months-12 years): 15 mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight given every 12 hours for 10 days.

Pharyngitis/Tonsilitis

Adults (≥13 years): 500 mg given once a day for 10 days.

Children (2 years-12 years): 7.5 mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight given every 12 hours for 10 days.

Sinus Infection

Adults (≥13 years): 250 mg given every 12 hours for 10 days. For moderate to severe infections the dose is 500 mg given every 12 hours for 10 days.

Infants and Children (6 months to 12 years): 7.5 mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight given every 12 hours for 10 days or 15 mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight given every 12 hours for 10 days.

Skin Infections

Adults (≥13 years): 250 mg given every 12 hours for 10 days, or 500 mg given once daily for 10 days, or 500 mg given every 12 hours for 10 days.

Children (2 to 12 years of age): 20 mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight given once a day for 10 days.


How should I take Cefzil?

Cefzil is taken by mouth with or without food. Take Cefzil with food to avoid stomach upset.

Shake Cefzil oral suspension well before you use it.


What should I avoid while taking Cefzil?

Do not stop taking Cefzil even if you feel better. Not completing the full dosage schedule may decrease the drug's effectiveness and increase the chances that the bacteria may become resistant to Cefzil and similar antibiotics.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Cefzil?

If Cefzil is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Cefzil with the following: certain antibiotics such as amikacin, certain strong diuretics such as ethacrynic acid or furosemide, oral contraceptives, probenecid, propantheline.


What are the possible side effects of Cefzil?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: abdominal pain, confusion, diaper rash, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, genital itching, headache, hives, hyperactivity, nervousness, rash, sleepiness, superinfection (additional infection), vaginal inflammation, vomiting, yellow eyes and skin


Can I receive Cefzil if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of Cefzil during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Cefzil?

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time.


How should I store Cefzil?

Store Cefzil tablets at room temperature. Keep the oral suspension in the refrigerator and throw away any unused portion after 14 days.
