Corgard is used in the treatment of chest pain, usually caused by lack of oxygen to the heart due to clogged arteries. It is also used to reduce high blood pressure.


What is the most important information I should know about Corgard?

You should not stop taking Corgard suddenly. This can cause increased chest pain and even a heart attack. If needed, your dose should be gradually reduced by your doctor.

If you have high blood pressure, you must take Corgard regularly for it to be effective. Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may be several weeks before you get the full benefit of Corgard. You must continue taking it even if you are feeling well. Corgard dose not cure high blood pressure, it only keeps it under control.


Who should not take Corgard?

Do not use Corgard if you have breathing problems, certain types of heart problems, or if you are allergic to Corgard or any of its ingredients.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Corgard?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Corgard. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have breathing or heart problems, high blood sugar, kidney disease, or liver disease.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Chest Pain

Adults: The usual initial dose is 40 milligrams (mg) once daily. Your dose may be increased by 40 to 80 mg at 3- to 7-day intervals. The usual long-term dose is 40 or 80 mg once daily. Doses up to 160 or 240 mg once a day may be needed in certain patients.

High Blood Pressure

Adults: The usual initial dose is 40 mg once daily. Your dose may be gradually increased by 40 to 80 mg increments. The usual long-term dose is 40 or 80 mg once daily. Doses up to 240 or 320 mg once a day may be needed in certain patients.

If you have kidney disease your doctor may prescribe lower doses.


How should I take Corgard?

Corgard can be taken with or without food.


What should I avoid while taking Corgard?

Do not stop taking Corgard abruptly. This can cause increased chest pain and even a heart attack. Speak to your doctor before you stop taking Corgard.

Corgard may make you drowsy or less alert. Avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery or participating in any hazardous activity that requires full mental alertness until you know how Corgard affects you.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Corgard?

If Corgard is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Corgard with any of the following: blood pressure medications, diabetes medications including insulin and glyburide, epinephrine.


What are the possible side effects of Corgard?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: change in behavior, changes in heartbeat, dizziness or light-headedness, mild drowsiness, slow heartbeat, weakness, fatigue

Corgard may mask the symptoms of low blood sugar or it can alter blood sugar levels. If you are diabetic, monitor your blood sugar regularly.


Can I receive Corgard if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of Corgard during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Talk with your doctor before taking this drug if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Corgard?

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is within 8 hours of your next scheduled dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time.


How should I store Corgard?

Store at room temperature away from light and heat. Keep in a tightly closed container.
