What is Cozaar?

Cozaar is used to treat high blood pressure, to lower the risk of stroke if you have high blood pressure and a heart problem called left ventricular hypertrophy, or to slow the worsening of diabetic kidney disease (nephropathy).

What is the most important information I should know about Cozaar?

You must take Cozaar regularly for it to be effective. Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may be several weeks before you get the full benefit of Cozaar. You must continue taking it even if you are feeling well. Cozaar does not cure high blood pressure; it keeps it under control.

Do not take Cozaar if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Cozaar can harm your unborn baby.

Cozaar is not recommended in children <6 years of age.

Who should not take Cozaar?

Do not take Cozaar if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Cozaar?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Cozaar. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have chronic heart failure, kidney disease, liver disease, or if you are vomiting a lot or having diarrhea.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

High Blood Pressure

Adults: The usual starting dose is 50 milligrams (mg) once daily. However, Cozaar can be taken twice daily, with total daily doses ranging from 25 to 100 mg. If your blood pressure does not respond within 3 to 6 weeks, your doctor may increase your dose or add a low-dose diuretic (water pill) to your regimen.

Children ≥ 6 years: The usual recommended dose is 0.7 mg per 2.2 pounds once a day. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 50 mg, and the doses can be given in tablets or suspension (liquid form).

High Blood Pressure with Heart Problems

Adults: The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily. A diuretic is often added and you doctor will modify your doses accordingly.

Diabetic Kidney Disease

Adults: The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily. The doctor may increase the dose to 100 mg once a day if blood pressure remains too high.

How should I take Cozaar?

Take Cozaar exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Cozaar can be taken with or without food.

What should I avoid while taking Cozaar?

Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how Cozaar affects you. You may feel lightheaded or faint, especially during the first few days of therapy.

Avoid excessive sweating, dehydration, severe diarrhea, or vomiting, which could make you lose too much water and cause a severe drop in blood pressure.

Do not take potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes without consulting your doctor.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Cozaar?

If Cozaar is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before taking Cozaar with the following: diuretics (water pills) nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as indomethacin, potassium supplements, salt substitutes containing potassium.

What are the possible side effects of Cozaar?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: back pain, diarrhea, dizziness, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, stuffy nose, fatigue, upper respiratory infections

Can I receive Cozaar if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Drugs such as Cozaar can cause injury or even death to the unborn child when used in the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Stop taking Cozaar as soon as you know you are pregnant. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor before taking Cozaar. Do not breastfeed while you are taking Cozaar.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Cozaar?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time. Do not take 2 doses at once.

How should I store Cozaar?

Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container away from light.
