What is Dalmane?

Dalmane is a hypnotic agent used to treat insomnia, which includes difficulty falling asleep, waking up frequently at night, or waking up early in the morning. Dalmane is also used to treat patients who have medical conditions requiring restful sleep.

What is the most important information I should know about Dalmane?

Do not use this medication if you are pregnant.

The failure of insomnia to remit after 7 to 10 days of treatment may indicate the presence of a primary psychiatric and/or medical illness that should be evaluated.

Due to sedative properties, avoid alcohol consumption while on Dalmane.

Tolerance and dependence may occur with the use of Dalmane.

You may experience withdrawal symptoms if you stop using Dalmane abruptly. Discontinue or change your dose only in consultation with your doctor.

Who should not take Dalmane?

Do not take Dalmane if you are pregnant, under the age of 15, or if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.

Elderly patients should use caution, since Dalmane may lead to oversedation, dizziness, and confusion.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Dalmane?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Dalmane. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have chronic breathing problems, liver or kidney problems, or if you are depressed or have suicidal thoughts. Advise your doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, or you are planning to become pregnant.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The usual dosage is 30 milligrams (mg) taken before bedtime. In some patients, 15 mg may be sufficient.

How should I take Dalmane?

Take Dalmane exactly as prescribed.

What should I avoid while taking Dalmane?

Avoid driving or participating in hazardous activities after taking Dalmane.

Avoid other sedatives such as alcohol or sleep aids while taking Dalmane.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Dalmane?

Alcohol intensifies the effects of Dalmane. Do not drink alcohol while taking Dalmane or until several days after discontinuing it.

If Dalmane is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Dalmane with drugs that slow or depress the central nervous system or that have hypnotic properties. Tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking or plan to take, including prescription and nonprescription medications, nutritional supplements, and herbs.

What are the possible side effects of Dalmane?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: dizziness, drowsiness, light-headedness, staggering, falling, sedation, lethargy, disorientation, headache, heartburn, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, nervousness, talkativeness, apprehension, irritability, weakness, palpitations, chest pains, body and joint pain, genital and urinary pain

Withdrawal symptoms may include: convulsions, tremor, abdominal and muscle cramps, vomiting and sweating

Can I receive Dalmane if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Do not take Dalmane if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Dalmane should be discontinued prior to becoming pregnant. Consult with your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.
