People who take antidepressant drugs or tranquilizers, or who use alcohol in excess, should use caution with when taking this drug.

Propoxyphene, when taken in higher-than-recommended doses over long periods of time, can produce drug dependence.

Do not take Darvocet-N if you are suicidal or addiction prone, or if you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to propoxyphene or acetaminophen.

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Darvocet-N. Make sure your doctor knows if you are taking tranquilizers, sleep aids, antidepressants, antihistamines, or any other drug that make you sleepy. The use of these drugs with propoxyphene increases their sedative effects and may lead to overdose symptoms, including death. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney or liver problems, if you use alcohol in excess, or if you are suicidal or addiction prone.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The usual dosage is 100 milligrams (mg) of propoxyphene napsylate and 650 mg of acetaminophen every 4 hours as needed for pain. The maximum recommended dose of propoxyphene napsylate is 600 mg per day.

Kidney or liver impairment: Patients with kidney or liver problems should receive a lower total daily dose.

What should I avoid while taking Darvocet-N?

You should limit your intake of alcohol while taking this medication. Use caution while driving a vehicle or using machinery until you know how the drug affects you, as Darvocet-N can make you sleepy. Do not take more of the drug than your doctor has prescribed.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Darvocet-N?

The central nervous system-depressant effect of Darvocet-N is additive with that of other central nervous system (CNS) depressants, including alcohol.

If Darvocet-N is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Darvocet-N with the following: alcohol, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, blood thinners, muscle relaxants, sedatives, tranquilizers,


What are the possible side effects of Darvocet-N?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, skin rashes, lightheadedness, headache, weakness, hallucinations, minor visual disturbances, and feelings of elation or discomfort.

Liver dysfunction has been reported in association of both active components of Darvocet-N 50 and Darvocet-N 100.


Can I receive Darvocet-N if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Darvocet-N should not be used during pregnancy unless your doctor knows you are pregnant and specifically recommends its use. Cases of temporary dependence in the newborn have occurred when the mother has taken propoxyphene consistently in the weeks before delivery. Low levels of propoxyphene have been detected in human milk.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Darvocet-N?

If you miss a dose of the drug, skip that dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
