What is Flexeril?

Flexeril is a muscle relaxant used to relieve muscle spasms due to sprains, strains, or pulls.

What is the most important information I should know about Flexeril?

Flexeril is not a substitute for the physical therapy, rest, or exercise that your doctor orders for proper healing. Although Flexeril relieves the pain of strains and sprains, it is not useful for other types of pain.

Who should not take Flexeril?

Do not take Flexeril if you are taking antidepressant drugs known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine or if you have taken an MAOI within the last 2 weeks. Avoid Flexeril if you are allergic to it or if you have an overactive thyroid gland.

Do not take Flexeril if you have recently had a heart attack, if you have chronic heart failure, or suffer from an irregular heartbeat.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Flexeril?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medication you are taking before beginning treatment with Flexeril. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you are elderly, have liver disease, have ever had the eye condition called glaucoma, or if you have ever been unable to urinate. Let your doctor know if you have irregular heartbeats or other heart problems.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The usual dose of Flexeril is 5 milligrams (mg) taken 3 times a day. The dose may be increased to 10 mg taken 3 times a day.

How should I take Flexeril?

Flexeril may be taken with or without food. Flexeril should be used only for short periods (no more than 3 weeks).

Flexeril may cause dry mouth. Sucking a hard candy, chewing gum, or melting ice chips in your mouth can provide temporary relief.

What should I avoid while taking Flexeril?

Do not take Flexeril for more than 2-3 weeks.

Flexeril can make you feel drowsy or less alert. Use caution when driving or operating dangerous machinery. Avoid participating in any hazardous activity that requires full mental alertness until you know how Flexeril affects you.

Avoid alcoholic beverages while taking Flexeril.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Flexeril?

If Flexeril is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Flexeril with the following: antidepressants known as MAOIs, such as phenelzine and tranylcypromine; barbiturates such as phenobarbital; guanethidine and other high blood pressure drugs; drugs that slow the central nervous system, such as alprazolam and triazolam; and tramadol.

What are the possible side effects of Flexeril?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth

Can I receive Flexeril if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of Flexeril during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while taking Flexeril.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Flexeril?

If it is within an hour or so of your scheduled time, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you do not remember until later, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

How should I store Flexeril?

Store away from heat, light, and moisture.
