Keppra is used to several types of seizures in both adults and children with epilepsy: partial onset seizures in adults and children (4 years and older), myoclonic seizures in adults, and juvenile myoclonic epilepsy in children 12 years and older. Keppra is used to treat primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and idiopathic generalized epilepsy in children ≥6 years.

Keppra XR (an extended-release form) is used to treat partial onset seizures in patients 16 years and older.

Keppra may cause sleepiness, coordination problems, and behavior problems when being taken for adult partial onset seizures. In children, Keppra may cause sleepiness and behavior problems when it is taken for partial onset seizures.

Do not take Keppra if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in either the tablets or oral solution.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Keppra; Keppra XR?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning therapy with Keppra. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, including if you have kidney disease, are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant while on this medication, or are breastfeeding.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults and children 16 years and older: The usual dose is 1000 milligrams (mg)/day (given as 500 mg 2 times a day).

Children 4 to 16 years: The usual starting dose is 20 mg/kilogram (kg) per day (taken as 10 mg/kg 2 times a day). The daily dose should be increased every 2 weeks by increments of 20 mg/kg to the recommended daily dose of 60 mg/kg (30 mg/kg twice per day).

Keppra XR may be dosed at 1000 to 3000 mg per day. Your doctor may adjust your dose if you have kidney problems.


How should I take Keppra; Keppra XR?

Keppra is taken orally with or without food. If you are taking Keppra twice a day, then take it once in the morning and once at night. Take Keppra at the same times each day. Swallow the tablets whole; do not chew or crush the tablets.


What should I avoid while taking Keppra; Keppra XR?

Avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing other activities that need your complete focus until you know how this drug affects you. Keppra may make you sleepy or dizzy.

Avoid becoming pregnant while being treated with Keppra.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Keppra; Keppra XR?

If Keppra is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Always check with your doctor before combining any other medication with Keppra.

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: depression, dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, nasal infection, nervousness, pain, sleepiness, sore throat, weakness, behavior changes


Can I receive Keppra; Keppra XR if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before beginning treatment with Keppra. It is not recommended to be pregnant while receiving this type of epileptic therapy.


How should I store Keppra; Keppra XR?
