What is Methergine?

Methergine is a medication known as an ergot alkaloid that is used to help prevent and control bleeding in pregnant women during or after labor and delivery.

What is the most important information I should know about Methergine?

Under normal conditions Methergine should not be given via an I.V. because of the risk of severe high blood pressure or even stroke.

You should take Methergine cautiously if you have an infection of the blood known as sepsis, a disease of the blood vessels known as obliterative vascular disease, or liver or kidney disease.

Who should not take Methergine?

You should not take Methergine if you have high blood pressure, are pregnant, are sensitive orhave an allergy to methergine, or have a type of syndrome that develops during pregnancy known as toxemia.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Methergine?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medication you are taking before beginning treatment with Methergine. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you are pregnant or nursing, or you have high blood pressure.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: Intravenously

0.2 milligrams (mg) given intravenously after a specific time during labor.

Oral Tablet

0.2 mg (1 tablet) taken 3-4 times daily for up to 7 days.

How should I take Methergine?

Methergine can be taken with or without food and should be taken at the same time every day.

What should I avoid while taking Methergine?

You should avoid eating grapefruits or drinking grapefruit juice.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Methergine?

If Methergine is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Methergine with the following:

Clarithromycin,Delavirdine,Erythromycin,Fluconazole,Fluoxetine,Fluvoxamine,Grapefruit juice,Indinavir,Itraconazole,Ketoconazole,Nefazodone,Nelfinavir,Ritonavir,Saquinavir,Troleandomycin,Voriconazole,Zileuton,Clotrimazole,Other medications known as vasoconstrictors,Other medications known as ergot alkaloids

What are the possible side effects of Methergine?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: High blood pressure, low blood pressure, nauseas, vomiting

Can I receive Methergine if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Methergine should not be used if you are pregnant. Methergine does pass into breast milk, so you should tell your doctor if you are nursing, pregnant, or plan on becoming pregnant.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Methergine?

If you forget to take Methergine, do not double your next dose. Skip the dose you missed and return to your normal dosing schedule.

How should I store Methergine?

You should store Methergine at room temperature away from light.
