What is Pravachol?
Return to topPravachol is a cholesterol-lowering drug, also known as a "statin". Your doctor may prescribe it along with a cholesterol-lowering diet if your blood cholesterol level is dangerously high and you have not been able to lower it by diet alone.
Pravastatin is used to reduce the amounts of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) "bad" cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides (another type of fat), and apolipoprotein B (a protein needed to make cholesterol) in your blood. These actions are important in reducing the risk of hardening of the arteries, which can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.
Pravachol can also be prescribed for children 8 years of age and older when diet alone fails to lower their cholesterol levels.
What is the most important information I should know about Pravachol?
Return to topPravachol is usually prescribed only if diet, exercise, and weight-loss fail to bring your cholesterol levels under control. It's important to remember that Pravachol is a supplement—not a substitute—for those other measures. To get the full benefit of the medication, you need to stick to the diet and exercise program prescribed by your doctor. These efforts to keep your cholesterol levels normal are important because together they may lower your risk of heart disease.
Because Pravachol may cause damage to the liver, your doctor will probably do blood tests before you start taking the drug and whenever he plans a dosage increase. The doctor should monitor you very carefully if you've had liver disease recently, if you have any symptoms of liver disease, or if you're a heavy drinker.
Since Pravachol may cause damage to muscle tissue, promptly report to your doctor any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if you also have a fever or you just generally do not feel well.
Who should not take Pravachol?
