What is Pred Forte?

Pred Forte is in a class of drugs called corticosteroids..It inhibits processes in the body that cause inflammation. Pred Forte is used for the treatment of redness, irritation, and swelling due to inflammation of the eye.


What is the most important information I should know about Pred Forte?

Do not use Pred Forte more often or for a longer period than your doctor orders. Overuse can increase the risk of side effects and can lead to eye damage. If you use Pred Forte eyedrops for 10 days or longer, an eye doctor should check your intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eyeball) frequently. If you have glaucoma, use Pred Forte cautiously. Chronic increased intraocular pressure may cause loss of vision.

If your eye inflammation or pain lasts longer than 48 hours or becomes worse, stop using Pred Forte and call your doctor.

If your eye problems return, do not use any leftover Pred Forte without first consulting your doctor.


Who should not take Pred Forte?

You should not take Pred Forte if you have herpes or other viral diseases of the eye, or certain bacterial or fungal diseases of the eye.

Do not use Pred Forte if you are allergic to prednisolone or other steroids.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Pred Forte?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medication you are taking before beginning treatment with Pred Forte. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have had viral, bacterial or fungal diseases of the eye.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: Put 1 to 2 drops under the eyelid 2 to 4 times daily. During the first 24 to 48 hours, your doctor may want you to use more frequent doses.


How should I take Pred Forte?

Use Pred Forte exactly as directed by your doctor. Follow these steps to administer Pred Forte:

1. Wash your hands thoroughly.

2. Vigorously shake the dropper bottle.

3. Gently pull your lower eyelid down to form a pocket next to your eye.

4. Do not touch the applicator tip to any surface including your eye.

5. Brace the bottle against the bridge of your nose or your forehead.

6. Tilt your head back and squeeze Pred Forte into your eye.

7. Close your eyes gently. Keep them closed for 1 to 2 minutes.

8. Do not rinse the dropper.

9. Wait for 5 to 10 minutes before using a second eye medication.


What should I avoid while taking Pred Forte?

Pred Forte may increase the chance of infection from contact lenses. Your doctor may advise you to stop wearing your contacts while using Pred Forte.

Do not touch the dropper to any surface, including your eyes or hands. The dropper is sterile. If it becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in your eye.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Pred Forte?

If Pred Forte is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Pred Forte with oral steroid medication such as prednisone, methylprednisolone, and others.


What are the possible side effects of Pred Forte?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible.

Side effects may include: allergic reactions, blurred vision, burning/stinging, cataract formation, delayed wound healing, dilated pupils, drooping eyelid, increased pressure inside the eyeball, inflamed eyes, perforation of the eyeball, secondary infection, ulcers of the cornea

Occasionally, long-term use of Pred Forte eyedrops may cause side effects due to an overload of steroid hormone. Side effects may include a "moon-faced" appearance, obese trunk, humped upper back, wasted limbs, and purple stretch marks on the skin. These effects are likely to disappear once Pred Forte use stops.


Can I receive Pred Forte if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of Pred Forte during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Pred Forte?

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and apply the next one as directed. Do not use a double dose of this medication.

Store away from heat and direct light. Keep the bottle tightly closed and protect from freezing.
