What is Provigil?

Provigil is used to treat narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome, and shift work sleep disorder.


What is the most important information I should know about Provigil?

Provigil may cause a rash or a serious allergic reaction. Stop Provigil and call your doctor right away or get emergency treatment if you have any of the following: skin rash or skin that blisters and peels; hives; sores in your mouth; swelling of your face, eyes, lips, tongue, or throat; trouble swallowing or breathing; or hoarse voice.

Provigil is not approved for use in children.

Provigil is a controlled substance because it can be abused or lead to dependence. Keep Provigil in a safe place to prevent misuse and abuse.


Who should not take Provigil?

Do not take Provigil if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

It is not known if Provigil is safe for children under the age of 16. Reduced levels of white blood cells (cells that fight infections) have occurred in some children who have taken Provigil.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Provigil?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Provigil. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have high blood pressure or problems with your heart, liver, or kidneys. Also tell your doctor if you have used stimulant medications or if you have or have had a mental disorder known as psychosis.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The usual dose of Provigil is 200 milligrams (mg) taken as a single dose in the morning. Adults 65 years and older may need a lower dose if they have liver or kidney disease, which reduces the body's ability to metabolize Provigil. For patients with narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome, Provigil should be taken as a single dose in the morning. For patients with shift work sleep disorder, Provigil should be taken approximately 1 hour prior to the start of their work shift.


How should I take Provigil?

Take Provigil exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor will tell you the right time of day to take Provigil. You can take Provigil with or without food.

If you take more than your prescribed dose, or take Provigil too late in your waking day, you may find it harder to go to sleep. Call your doctor if you have any concerns.


What should I avoid while taking Provigil?

Avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how Provigil affects you.

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Provigil.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Provigil?

If Provigil is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Provigil with the following: antidepressants, carbamazepine, clomipramine, cyclosporine, diazepam, itraconazole, ketoconazole, MAOIs, methylphenidate, oral contraceptives and hormonal implants, phenobarbital, phenytoin, propranolol, rifampin, theophylline, and warfarin.


What are the possible side effects of Provigil?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: headache, nausea, nervousness, stuffy nose, diarrhea, back pain, anxiety, trouble sleeping, dizziness, upset stomach

Serious side effects may include: chest pain, mental problems, allergic reactions such as rash or hives


Can I receive Provigil if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of Provigil during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Provigil?

Take it as soon as possible. If you don't remember until the next day, skip the dose you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time.


How should I store Provigil?
