Teveten is used to treat high blood pressure, either alone or with other medications that help lower blood pressure, such as water pills (diuretics) or calcium channel blockers.

Do not use Teveten during the second or third trimesters of pregnancy. This drug can cause injury and even death to the developing baby. Tell your doctor immediately if you think you might be pregnant.

You must take Teveten regularly for it to be effective. Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may be several weeks before you get the full benefit of Teveten. You must continue taking it even if you are feeling well. Teveten does not cure blood pressure. It only keeps it under control.

Do not take Teveten if you are pregnant or if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it or any of its ingredients.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Teveten?

Mention all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Teveten. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney or liver disease, are on a salt-restricted diet or have high levels of potassium in your blood, or if you are taking potassium supplements.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The usual dose is 600 milligrams (mg) once daily. Teveten may also be taken once or twice daily with total daily doses ranging from 400-800 mg.


How should I take Teveten?

Teveten can be taken with or without food. Try to establish a regular routine by taking it at the same time each day—in the morning with breakfast, for example. This reduces the chance that you'll forget a dose.


What should I avoid while taking Teveten?

Teveten may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities.

Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking Teveten.

Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or artificial UV light (tanning beds). Teveten may increase the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight and you may be sunburned as a result. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when you are outside.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Teveten?

If Teveten is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Teveten with any of the following: potassium-sparing diuretics (water pills), such as amiloride, spironolactone, or triamterene; or potassium supplements.


What are the possible side effects of Teveten?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: cold, cough, runny nose, sore throat


Can I receive Teveten if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Teveten can cause injury or even death to an unborn child when used in the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Stop taking Teveten as soon as you know you are pregnant and be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Teveten may appear in breast milk. Do not breastfeed while taking Teveten.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Teveten?

If you miss a dose of Teveten, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule.
