What is Timoptic?

Timoptic is an ophthalmic (applied directly in the eye) medication that reduces pressure in the eye. It is used to treat glaucoma (elevated pressure in the eye) alone or with other medications.

What is the most important information I should know about Timoptic?

Although Timoptic is applied only to the eye, the medication may be absorbed and may affect other parts of the body. If you have diabetes, asthma or other respiratory disease, or decreased heart function, make sure your doctor is aware of the problem.

Who should not take Timoptic?

Do not use Timoptic if you have bronchial asthma; a history of bronchial asthma or other serious breathing disorders, such as emphysema; if you have a slow heartbeat, heart block (conduction disorder), heart failure, or inadequate blood supply to the circulatory system (cardiogenic shock); or if you have ever had an allergic reaction or are sensitive to Timoptic or any of its ingredients.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Timoptic?

Mention all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Timoptic. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have diabetes, asthma, other respiratory diseases, overactive thyroid, decreased heart function, or if you have a medical emergency. You should also have a discussion with your doctor before surgery or before dental treatment.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Your doctor will tailor an individual Timoptic dosage depending on your medical condition and how you responded to any previous glaucoma treatment.

Adults: The usual recommended starting dose of the regular solution is to place 1 drop of 0.25% Timoptic in the affected eye(s) 2 times per day. If you do not respond satisfactorily to this dosage, your doctor may tell you to place 1 drop of 0.5% Timoptic in the affected eye(s) 2 times a day.

The usual dose of the gel-forming solution is 1 drop of either 0.25% or 0.5% in the affected eye(s) once a day. Invert the closed container and shake it once before you use it.

How should I take Timoptic?

Timoptic should be used exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you need to use other eye medications along with Timoptic, use them at least 10 minutes before you instill Timoptic eye drops. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using the drops and wait 15 minutes before reinserting them.

Handle the Timoptic solution carefully to avoid contamination. Do not let the tip of the dispenser actually touch the eye. Do not enlarge the hole in the dispenser tip. Do not wash the dispenser tip with water, soap, or any other cleanser.

To administer Timoptic eye drops, follow these steps:

1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
2. Tilt your head back and gently pull your lower eyelid down to form a pocket.
3. Turn the bottle upside down, holding it with your thumb or index finger over the finger push area.
4. Press the bottle lightly until a single drop falls into the eye.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the other eye, if necessary.
6. Replace the cap firmly.

What should I avoid while taking Timoptic?

Do not touch the dropper to any surface. The dropper is sterile. If it becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in the eye.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Timoptic?

If Timoptic is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Timoptic with the following: blood pressure drugs, such as atenolol or metoprolol; calcium-blocking drugs, such as diltiazem, nifedipine, or verapamil; clonidine; dioxin; epinephrine; quinidine; reserpine; and serotonin inhibitors, such as fluoxetine, paroxetine, and sertraline.

What are the possible side effects of Timoptic?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: burning and stinging in the eye

Can I receive Timoptic if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of Timoptic during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while you are using Timoptic.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Timoptic?

If you use Timoptic eye drops once a day, apply them as soon as you remember. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the dose you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once. If you use Timoptic eye drops 2 or more times a day, apply them as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

How should I store Timoptic?

Store at room temperature, protected from light. Keep from freezing.
