What is Tussi-Organidin NR?

Tussi-Organidin NR relieves cough due to minor sore throat and bronchial irritation that may occur with the common cold or inhaled irritants. Tussi-Organidin NR helps loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to rid the bronchial passageways of bothersome mucus, drain bronchial tubes, and make coughs more productive.


What is the most important information I should know about Tussi-Organidin NR?

If cough persists for more than one week, tends to recur, or is accompanied by fever, rash, persistent headache, or vomiting, consult a doctor. Do not take this product for persistent or chronic cough such as occurs with smoking, asthma, emphysema, or where excessive secretions accompany cough, except under the advice and supervision of a doctor.

Tussi-Organidin NR may cause you to be drowsy or less alert. Only take the drug for as long as it is prescribed, in the amount prescribed, and no more frequently than prescribed.

At high doses or in sensitive patients, Tussi-Organidin NR may slow your breathing or produce irregular and periodic breathing.

Do not use Tussi-Organidin NR if you have a known hypersensitivity to guaifenesin, codeine, other morphine derivatives, or any of its other components.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Tussi-Organidin NR?

Mention all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Tussi-Organidin NR. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have severe kidney or liver problems, an underactive thyroid gland, chronic lung disease or shortness of breath, Addison's disease, an enlarged prostate, urethral stricture (narrowing of the tube carrying urine from the bladder), a head injury, increased intracranial pressure, an abdominal condition, alcoholism, or if you are in a weakened condition.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults and children 12 years of age and older: The usual dose is 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters [mL]) every 4 hours, not to exceed 8 teaspoons in 24 hours.

Children 6 to under 12 years old: The usual dose is one-half teaspoon (2.5 mL) every 4 hours, not to exceed 4 teaspoons in 24 hours.

Children 2 to under 6 years old: Oral dosage is based on 1 milligram/kilogram/day of codeine administered in four equal divided doses. The average bodyweight for each age may also be used to determine codeine dosage.

Codeine is not recommended for children under 2 years of age.


How should I take Tussi-Organidin NR?

Take Tussi-Organidin NR exactly as prescribed. Do not increase the amount you take or the number of doses per day without your doctor's approval. Take this medication with a full glass of water after each dose to help loosen mucus in the lungs.


What should I avoid while taking Tussi-Organidin NR?

Avoid driving a car or operating machinery until you know how Tussi-Organidin NR affects you. Avoid alcohol and other central nervous system depressants while taking Tussi-Organidin NR.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Tussi-Organidin NR?

If Tussi-Organidin NR is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Always check with your doctor before combining Tussi-Organidin NR with the following: antihistamines; antipsychotics; alcohol; anticholinergic drugs; antidepressants, including Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants; anti-anxiety drugs; or central nervous system (CNS) depressants, including sedatives, tranquilizers, and narcotic painkillers.


What are the possible side effects of Tussi-Organidin NR?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: lightheadedness, dizziness, shortness of breath, sedation, nausea, vomiting

Less frequent side effects may include: allergic reactions, mood disorders, constipation, abdominal pain, itching


Can I receive Tussi-Organidin NR if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Talk with your doctor before taking this drug if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Tussi-Organidin NR should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk and because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Tussi-Organidin NR?

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time.


How should I store Tussi-Organidin NR?
