What is Vagifem?
Return to topVagifem is a local estrogen therapy (inserted into the vagina) that can help to relieve the urinary and vaginal symptoms associated with the decline of your body's estrogen production during menopause.
What is the most important information I should know about Vagifem?
Return to topVagifem may be associated with an increased risk of developing cancer of the endometrium (the lining inside of the uterus), marked by unusual vaginal bleeding. Vagifem may cause you to retain water, which can influence your condition if you have asthma, epilepsy, migraines, or heart or kidney problems.
If you have a family history of abnormal fat metabolism known as familial hyperlipoproteinemia, Vagifem may worsen your condition by increasing certain substances known as triglycerides in your blood. You should be cautious when using Vagifem if you have ever become jaundiced (yellowing of the skin) during pregnancy or if you have any type of liver injury, bone disease, or kidney disease. You should not begin using Vagifem if you currently have an untreated infection of the vaginal tract.
Who should not take Vagifem?
Return to topYou should not use Vagifem if you are pregnant, have abnormal vaginal bleeding, have just given birth, are breastfeeding, or if you have a history of certain cancers. You should also not use Vagifem if you have blood disorders known as porphyria, thrombophlebitis, or any type of clotting disorder, especially if they were caused by previous estrogen usage. Do not take if you have an allergy to any components of Vagifem.
What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Vagifem?

Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have a history of cancer; abnormal vaginal bleeding; heart, liver, kidney, or bone disease; if you are planning on becoming pregnant; any type of blood disorder; or if you have had any type of adverse reaction to estrogen before.
What is the usual dosage?
Return to topThe information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.
Adults: The usual dosage is one tablet inserted inside the vagina once daily for 2 weeks. One tablet is inserted inside the vagina twice weekly thereafter.
How should I take Vagifem?
Return to topVagifem tablets can be inserted into the vagina either when lying down or when standing. If the tablet has come out of the applicator before inserting it, do not try to replace it—use a fresh tablet-filled applicator instead. The applicator should be inserted inside the vagina until it cannot be comfortably inserted farther or until half the applicator is inside your vagina, whichever is less. Next, press the plunger until your hear a click.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Vagifem?
Return to topIf you forget to insert a Vagifem tablet, insert one as you remember. If it is closer to your next scheduled dose, skip the dose you missed and return to your normal dosing schedule.
