What is Zonegran?

Zonegran is taken with other medications to treat partial seizures in adults.

What is the most important information I should know about Zonegran?

Zonegran can cause serious reactions in some patients. Call your doctor right away if you experience any of the following: rash, fever, sore throat, sores in your mouth, bruising easily, sudden back pain, abdominal pain, pain when urinating, bloody or dark urine, decreased sweating or increased body temperature (especially if you are under 17 years old), depression, thoughts that are unusual for you, or speech or language problems. Zonegran may cause drowsiness or coordination problems. You should take it with caution if you have any type of kidney or liver problems.

Who should not take Zonegran?

Do not take Zonegran if you are allergic or sensitive to it or any of its ingredients. Also, you should not take Zonegran if you are allergic to sulfa-derived medications such as sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim.

What is the usual dosage?

Adults (16 and older): The usual starting dose is 100 milligrams (mg) taken once a day for 2 weeks. The dose is usually increased to 200 mg per day for at least 2 additional weeks, after which the total daily dose may be increased to 300-600 mg per day depending on your condition.

Zonegran should be taken exactly as prescribed. It is important to swallow the capsules whole; do not break or crush them. You should drink at least 6-8 glasses of water daily while taking Zonegran, which will help to prevent kidney stones. Do not suddenly stop taking it unless you are instructed by your doctor.
