Zovirax is an antiviral medication that treats herpes infections caused by different types of herpes viruses. Zovirax is used to treat initial and recurrent genital herpes infections, chicken pox (varicella), and shingles (herpes zoster).

Zovirax can cause injury to your kidneys and even death due to complete kidney failure. Take with caution if you have any type of kidney problems. Also, Zovirax may cause serious blood disorders if you have problems with your immune system. You should stay hydrated while taking Zovirax.

Mention all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Zovirax. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney problems, a deficiency of your immune system, or if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Acute Treatment of Herpes Zoster (shingles)

Adults: The usual dose is 800 milligrams (mg) taken every 4 hours, 5 times daily for 7 to 10 days.

Genital Herpes: Treatment of Initial Genital Herpes

Adults: The usual dose is 200 mg every 4 hours, taken 5 times a day for 10 days.

Chronic Suppressive Therapy for Recurrent Disease

Adults: The usual dose is 400 mg taken 2 times a day for up to 12 months, followed by a medical re-evaluation. Your doctor may vary your dose from 200 mg taken 3 times a day to 200 mg taken 5 times a day.

Intermittent Therapy

Adults: The usual dose is 200 mg taken every 4 hours, 5 times a day for 5 days. Therapy should be started at the earliest sign or symptom of herpes infection recurrence.

Treatment of Chickenpox

Adults: The usual dose is 800 mg taken 4 times a day for 5 days.

Children 2 years and older: The usual dose is 20 mg per 2.2 pounds of bodyweight per dose taken 4 times a day for 5 days.

Children over 88 pounds: The usual dose is 800 mg taken 4 times a day for 5 days.


How should I take Zovirax?

Zovirax doses should be taken at the same time every day, with or without food. Drink plenty of water.


What should I avoid while taking Zovirax?

Avoid becoming dehydrated.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Zovirax?

If Zovirax is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Zovirax with probenecid.

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Zovirax?

If you forget to take Zovirax, take it as soon as you remember. If it is closer to your next scheduled dose, skip the dose you missed and take Zovirax according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double your doses.
