Biaxin XL is an antibiotic indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by specific organisms. In particular, it is used to treat acute maxillary sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, and community-acquired pneumonia.


What is the most important information I should know about Biaxin XL?

It is important that Biaxin XL is only used to treat bacterial infections. It does not help in the treatment of viral or fungal infections. In addition, it is imperative that you finish the medication as directed, even if you think you feel better. Due to potential harm to the baby, it is also important to note that Biaxin XL should only be used by pregnant women when other alternatives have failed.

Do not use Biaxin XL if you have had a previous allergic response to erythromycin or any of the macrolide antibiotics. Also, due to harmful effects when administered concomitantly, do not take Biaxin XL if you are on cisapride, pimozide, astemizole, or terfenadine.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Biaxin XL?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Biaxin XL. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Acute Maxillary Sinusitis (H. influenzae, M.catarrhalis, S. pneumoniae)

Adults: Take one 500-milligram (mg) tablet twice daily for 14 days.

Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis (H. influenzae, H. parainfluenzae, M.catarrhalis, S. pneumoniae)

Adults: Take one 500-mg tablet twice daily for 7-14 days, as directed.

Community-Acquired Pneumonia (H. influenzae, H. parainfluenzae, M. catarrhalis, S. pneumoniae, C. pneumoniae, M. pneumoniae)

Adults: Take one 500-mg tablet twice daily for 7-14 days, as directed.

Biaxin XL formulation is not appropriate for children less than 12 years old.


How should I take Biaxin XL?

Take Biaxin XL tablets with food. Biaxin XL tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed, or cut.


What should I avoid while taking Biaxin XL?

It is important to avoid using certain medications (see list below) with Biaxin XL. Avoid becoming pregnant while on Biaxin XL therapy. Also, avoid using Biaxin XL unless you have been properly diagnosed by your doctor with a bacterial infection that is treatable with Biaxin XL.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Biaxin XL?

If Biaxin XL is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Biaxin XL with the following: alprazolam; astemizole; bepridil; carbamazepine; cisapride; colchicine; digoxin; dihydroergotamine; eplerenone; ergoloid mesylates; ergonovine; ergotamine; HIV medications such as zidovudine, didanosine, and ritonavir; methylergonovine; methysergide; omeprazole; pimozide; ranolazine; sildenafil; statins such as lovastatin, simvastatin; terfenadine; theophylline; thioridazine; triazolam; and ziprasidone.


What are the possible side effects of Biaxin XL?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: diarrhea, abnormal taste, nausea, headache


Can I receive Biaxin XL if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The use of Biaxin XL is not recommended in women who are or may become pregnant. Biaxin XL is only used in pregnant women if and when other alternatives have failed. Talk to your doctor about whether the benefits outweigh the risks of taking Biaxin XL if you are pregnant.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Biaxin XL?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time of your next dose, skip it and resume your scheduled dose. Do not double your dose.
