What is CaloMist?

CaloMist is a nasal spray containing vitamin B12. It is used in people with B12 deficiency who have no nervous system involvement.


What is the most important information I should know about CaloMist?

People who have chronic vitamin B12 deficiency of unknown cause will require indefinite treatment with vitamin B12. Stopping therapy or inadequate treatment may result in anemia and the development or worsening of irreversible neurological damage.


Who should not take CaloMist?

Do not use CaloMist if you are sensitive to cobalt, vitamin B12, or any components of this product. The effectiveness of this medication in people with nasal problems (such as nasal congestion or allergic rhinitis) or in children has not been evaluated.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of CaloMist?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with CaloMist. Also talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have infections, kidney problems, a history of anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions), or megalobastic anemia.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The recommended dosage is 1 spray in each nostril once a day. This dosage schedule delivers 25 micrograms (mcg) per nostril, for a total daily dose of 50 mcg.


How should I take CaloMist?

Use it exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The dosing of CaloMist and other nasal sprays should be separated by several hours.

The pump must be primed before the bottle is used for the first time. To prime the pump, place the nozzle between the first and second finger with the thumb on the bottom of the bottle. Pump the unit firmly and quickly then repeat this priming an additional 6 times for a total of 7 priming sprays. Now the nasal spray is ready for first-time use. If 5 or more days elapse since the last use, the pump must be re-primed with 2 re-priming sprays.

When you are ready to use the spray, clear both nostrils, insert the nasal spray into the nostril, tilt your head forward, and press the nozzle. Sniff in gently. Repeat for the other nostril. Wipe the nozzle clean with a clean tissue. Replace the bottle's safety clip and cap.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with CaloMist?

If CaloMist is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Always check with your doctor before combining CaloMist with any other medication.

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Can I receive CaloMist if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

CaloMist should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.


What should I do if I miss a dose of CaloMist?

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
