Detrol LA treats symptoms of overactive bladder, including frequent urination, urgency (increased need to urinate), and urge incontinence (inability to control urination). The drug works by blocking the nerve impulses that prompt the bladder to contract.

If you suffer from urinary retention (inability to urinate normally), gastric retention (a blockage in the digestive system), or uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma (high pressure in the eyes), you should not take Detrol LA. You should also avoid this drug if it gives you an allergic reaction.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Detrol LA?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medication you are taking before beginning treatment with this drug. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have any of the following: a bladder obstruction or digestive disorder that could lead to a complete blockage; glaucoma; or a liver, kidney, or heart problem.

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The usual dosage of Detrol LA is 4 mg taken once a day. Your doctor may prescribe a lower or higher dose, depending on your needs.

Detrol LA can be taken with or without food. Swallow Detrol LA capsules whole.


What should I avoid while taking Detrol LA?

Detrol LA can cause blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness that may impair your mental alertness. Do not operate heavy machinery, drive an automobile, or engage in tasks that require for you to be alert, until you know how Detrol LA will affect you.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Detrol LA?

If you take Detrol LA with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Detrol LA with any of the following: clarithromycin, cyclosporine, erythromycin antibiotics, ketoconazole, itraconazole, miconazole, and vinblastine.

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Detrol LA.

Side effects may include: abdominal pain, blurred vision, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry eyes, dry mouth, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, headache, indigestion, vertigo


Can I receive Detrol LA if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The use of Detrol LA during pregnancy has not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor immediately. It is not known whether Detrol LA appears in breast milk. Use of the drug is not recommended while breastfeeding.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Detrol LA?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
