What is Effexor XR?

Effexor XR is used to treat depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and social anxiety disorder in adults. It may take several weeks for your symptoms to get better with Effexor XR.

What is the most important information I should know about Effexor XR?

Antidepressants can increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children and teenagers. Both adult and pediatric patients taking antidepressants should be watched closely for changes in moods or actions, especially when they first start therapy or when their dose is increased or decreased. Patients and their families should contact the doctor immediately if new symptoms develop or seem to get worse. Signs to watch for include anxiety, hostility, insomnia, restlessness, impulsive or dangerous behavior, and thoughts about suicide or dying.

Do not take this medication if you are currently taking a drug known as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). MAOIs can cause a very serious reaction or even death if taken at the same time as Effexor XR. You must stop taking your MAOI at least 14 days before beginning treatment with Effexor XR. Similarly, you should wait 7 days after stopping Effexor XR before starting an MAOI.

Effexor XR is not approved for use in pediatric patients.

Who should not take Effexor XR?

Do not take Effexor XR if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients, or if you are currently taking an MAOI or have taken an MAOI within the last 14 days.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Effexor XR?

Tell your doctor about all your medical problems, including suicidal thoughts, high blood pressure, heart disease, liver or kidney problems, glaucoma, seizures, or thyroid problems. Also alert your doctor if you have ever had symptoms of mania or hypomania, such as persistently elevated or irritable mood, a decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, hyperactivity, and rapid or excessive talking.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The usual starting dose is 75 milligrams (mg) once a day. If needed, the doctor may increase your daily dose in steps of 75 mg, up to a maximum of 225 mg a day.

How should I take Effexor XR?

Effexor XR should be taken as a single dose with food at about the same time every day, either in the morning or evening. The capsule should be swallowed whole; it should not be divided, crushed, chewed, or placed in water. The capsule can also be carefully opened and its contents sprinkled onto a spoonful of applesauce. This should be swallowed immediately and followed with a glass of water. Do not chew this mixture before swallowing.

What should I avoid while taking Effexor XR?

Until you know how Effexor XR affects you, be careful doing activities that require alertness, such as driving a car or operating machinery. Also, avoid drinking alcohol while taking this drug.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Effexor XR?

Do not take Effexor XR if you have taken an MAOI within the last 14 days.

Also, be sure to tell your doctor about all medicines you plan to take, including prescription and nonprescription medications, nutritional supplements, and herbs. Taking Effexor XR with certain drugs or supplements may increase the risk of serious side effects. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining this drug with the following: any drug that affects the central nervous system, antidepressants, cimetidine, diazepam, linezolid, lithium, migraine drugs known as triptans, St. John's wort, tramadol, and tryptophan supplements.

What are the possible side effects of Effexor XR?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: abnormal ejaculation, abnormal vision, agitation, confusion, constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, gas, loss of appetite, insomnia, nausea, nervousness, rapid heartbeat, sleepiness, sweating, tremor, yawning

Can I receive Effexor XR if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of Effexor XR during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Talk with your doctor before taking this drug if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Newborns whose mothers took Effexor XR late in the third trimester have had problems.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Effexor XR?

If you miss a dose of Effexor XR, it can be taken later that day. Don't try to make up for the missed dose by taking 2 doses the next day.

How should I store Effexor XR?

Store at room temperature.
