Flomax is used for the treatment of benign prostates hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is the swelling of the prostate gland, which may in-turn block the flow of urine. Symptoms of BPH are a weak or interrupted urinary stream, a feeling that you cannot empty your bladder completely, a feeling of delay or hesitation when you start to urinate, a need to urinate often, especially at night, or a feeling that you must urinate right away. Flomax relaxes the muscles of the prostate and increases urine flow.

Flomax is not indicated for use in women.

Flomax capsules can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, especially following the first dose or when changing doses of capsules. Such a drop in blood pressure may be cause fainting, dizziness, or lightheadedness. Therefore, get up slowly from a chair or bed at any time until you learn how you react to Flomax capsules. You should not drive or do any hazardous activities until you are used to the side effects of this drug. If you begin to feel dizzy, sit down until you feel better.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The usual dosage of Flomax is 0.4 milligrams (mg) daily. If there is no response to this strength, it may be increased to 0.8 mg daily.

Flomax should be taken 30 minutes after the same meal, everyday. Do not crush, chew, or open Flomax capsules.

If Flomax is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Flomax with the following: cimetidine, fluoxetine, ketoconazole, warfarin, and other drugs like Flomax.
