What is Maprotiline hydrochloride?

Maprotiline hydrochloride tablets are used to treat depression. Maprotiline is also used for the relief of anxiety associated with depression.

What is the most important information I should know about Maprotiline hydrochloride?

Antidepressant medicines may increase suicidal thoughts or actions in some children, teenagers, and young adults when the medicine is first started. Depression and other serious mental illnesses are the most important causes of suicidal thoughts and actions. Some people may have a particularly high risk of having suicidal thoughts or actions. These include people who have (or have a family history of) bipolar disorder (also called manic-depressive illness) or suicidal thoughts or actions.

Pay close attention to any changes, especially sudden changes, in mood, behaviors, thoughts, or feelings. This is very important when an antidepressant medicine is first started or when the dose is changed.

Call the doctor right away to report new or sudden changes in mood, behavior, thoughts, or feelings. Signs to watch for include new or worsening depression, new or worsening anxiety, agitation, insomnia, hostility, panic attacks, restlessness, extreme hyperactivity, and suicidal thinking or behavior.

Keep all follow-up visits as scheduled, and call the doctor between visits as needed, especially if you have concerns about symptoms.

Who should not take Maprotiline hydrochloride?

You should not take maprotiline if you are allergic to any of its components.

You should not take maprotiline if you have a known or suspected seizure disorder.

Do not take maprotiline with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) or within 14 days after discontinuing an MAOI.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Maprotiline hydrochloride?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with maprotiline. Talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially past or current heart problems, seizures, history of depression or suicidality, or history or family history of psychiatric illness, such as bipolar disorder. Tell your doctor if you have glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, bladder problems, or an overactive thyroid.

Tell your doctor if you are planning to have surgery, or plan to have it while taking maprotiline.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The usual starting dose for patients with mild to moderate depression is 75 milligrams (mg) daily. Eelderly patients may be started at a lower dosage, such as 25 mg daily, until the drug's effects are known.

The initial dose should be maintained for 2 weeks and may be gradually increased in increments of 25 mg as required and as tolerated.

In most patients, a maximum dose is 150 mg daily.

What should I avoid while taking Maprotiline hydrochloride?

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking maprotiline; once you speak with your doctor about your individual case, he or she may tell you to avoid other medications and/or foods.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Maprotiline hydrochloride?

If maprotiline is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining maprotiline with the following: barbiturates, benzodiazepines (such as Xanax and Valium), cimetidine, electroshock therapy, fluoxetine, phenytoin, and thyroid medications.

What are the possible side effects of Maprotiline hydrochloride?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: fluctuations in blood pressure, shortness of breath, nervousness, insomnia, nightmares, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, decreased urination, nausea, sexual dysfunction

Can I receive Maprotiline hydrochloride if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of maprotiline are not known during pregnancy. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant. Also, maprotiline is excreted in breast milk, so consult with your physician before breast feeding.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Maprotiline hydrochloride?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose, and resume your normal dosage schedule.

How should I store Maprotiline hydrochloride?

Store at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture.
