Nasacort AQ nasal spray is a corticosteroid used to treat the nasal symptoms (sneezing, runny nose, itching and stuffy nose) of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children 2 years and older.


What is the most important information I should know about Nasacort AQ?

Nosebleeds, nasal septal perforation, yeast infection, and impaired wound healing may occur while taking Nasacort AQ.

Nasal and inhaled corticosteroids, including Nasacort AQ, may result in the development of glaucoma, cataracts, or other serious eye conditions.

Corticosteroids can suppress your immune system and make you more susceptible to infections, such as chickenpox or measles. This drug should be used cautiously in people with tuberculosis; fungal, bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections; or ocular herpes simplex.

Very high dosages (or regular dosages in susceptible individuals) can affect the function of the pituitary and adrenal glands. Your doctor should monitor you for any such changes.

Nasacort AQ may affect the growth rate of children.

Do not use this medication if you have allergies to Nasacort AQ or any of its components.

Do not use if you have nasal septal ulcers, or have had nasal surgery or trauma to the nose.


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Nasacort AQ?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Nasacort AQ. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, have been exposed to chickenpox or measles, or are feeling unwell.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults and adolescents over 12 years: The starting and maximum dose is 220 micrograms (mcg) a day (2 sprays in each nostril once daily)

Children 6 to 12 years: The starting dose is 110 mcg a day (1 spray in each nostril once daily). The maximum dose is 220 mcg a day (2 sprays per nostril once daily).

Children 2 to 5 years: The starting and maximum dose 110 mcg a day (1 spray in each nostril once daily)


How should I take Nasacort AQ?

Follow the directions your doctor has given you regarding how many and how often the medication should be sprayed in the nostrils.

You must prime the bottle when using it for the first time or when have not used it for more than 2 weeks. To prime, put your thumb on the bottom of the bottle and your index and middle fingers on the "shoulders" of the bottle and hold upright. Point the bottle away from your eyes. Push the bottle with your thumb and against your two fingers firmly and quickly until a fine spray appears. Do this pumping action 5 times.


What should I avoid while taking Nasacort AQ?

Avoid spraying the medication into your eyes or mouth. Also avoid exposure to people infected with chickenpox or measles.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Nasacort AQ?

If Nasacort AQ is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Always check with your doctor before combining it with other medications.


What are the possible side effects of Nasacort AQ?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: Nosebleeds, flu syndrome, cough, bronchitis, sore throat, stomach upset, tooth disorder, headache, nasal or oral pain, redness of the nose, upper abdominal pain, diarrhea, and skin abrasions.


Can I receive Nasacort AQ if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of this medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding so he can determine if the benefits of using the medication will outweigh the risks


What should I do if I miss a dose of Nasacort AQ?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as your remember it. If it is close to your next dose, skip the dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.


How should I store Nasacort AQ?

Store at room temperature in an upright position. After using 120 sprays, throw the medicine away.
