What is Omnitrope?
Return to topOmnitrope is used for the treatment of children who are not growing because their bodies are not producing enough of growth hormone. This drug is also used in adults for the treatment of growth hormone deficiency (GHD).
What is the most important information I should know about Omnitrope?
Return to topOmnitrope contains benzyl alcohol; therefore it cannot be used to treat newborns.

Who should not take Omnitrope?
Return to topOmnitrope should not be taken if you or your child has any type of allergy to somatropin. Do not begin therapy with Omnitrope if you are not finished with your cancer treatment. Also, Omnitrope should only be used in children whose bones are not completely fused. This drug should not be taken if there are complications following open heart or abdominal surgery, multiple accidental traumas, or to patients having severe respiratory failure. Omnitrope should not be used in people who are severely obese or have respiratory problems because of Prader-Willi syndrome, or have diabetic retinopathy, an eye disease in people with high blood sugar.
What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Omnitrope?

What is the usual dosage?
Return to topThe information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.
Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD)
Adults: The recommended starting dose is not more than 0.04 milligrams (mg) per 2.2 pounds (lb) a week. The dosage may be increased at 4- to 8-week intervals to a maximum of 0.08 mg per 2.2 lb a week.
Children: The usual dose is 0.16 to 0.24 mg per 2.2 lb a week, divided into 6 to 7 daily doses.
How should I take Omnitrope?
Return to topThe weekly dose should be divided into evening injections just under the skin. Omnitrope may be given in the upper leg, buttocks, or stomach; the site of injections should be rotated daily.
What should I avoid while taking Omnitrope?
Return to topDo not share Omnitrope with another person. The pen needle is sterile; avoid contaminating the needle after opening it. Do not place it on a surface or touch exposed parts.
Avoid storing or carrying your Omnitrope with a pen needle attached. Never recap pen with the pen needle on.
What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Omnitrope?
Return to topIf Omnitrope is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is important to check with your doctor before combining Omnitrope with any of the following: estrogens, glucocorticoids, high blood sugar medications, and insulin.
