What is Optivar?

Optivar is taken to relieve and prevent the itchy eyes brought on by seasonal allergies. The drug usually starts to work within 3 minutes of placing the drops in the eye, and its effects usually last for about 8 hours.


What is the most important information I should know about Optivar?

Optivar is for the eye only. It should not be taken by mouth or injected.

Do not touch the dropper to any surface, including your eyes or hands. The dropper is sterile. If it becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in your eye.

If you wear soft contact lenses and your eyes are not red, wait at least 10 minutes after using Optivar before inserting your lenses. This will prevent them from absorbing the preservative in Optivar. You should not wear contact lenses if your eyes are red.


Who should not take Optivar?

Do not use Optivar if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it.

If you wear contact lenses, remember that Optivar should not be used to treat eye irritation caused by your lenses. Do not use Optivar to treat eye irritation that isn't caused by seasonal allergies


What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Optivar?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medication you are taking before beginning treatment with Optivar.


What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: The usual dose is 1 drop in each affected eye twice a day.

Children: Optivar is not recommended for use in children younger than 3 years old.


How should I take Optivar?

Use Optivar solution only in the eyes; never swallow it. Optivar is packaged in a bottle with a dropper tip. Wash your hands before using your eye drops.

To apply the eye drops: Tilt your head back slightly and pull down on your lower eyelid. Position the dropper above your eye. Look up and away from the dropper. Squeeze out a drop and close your eye. Apply gentle pressure to the inside corner of your eye (near your nose) for about 1 minute to prevent the liquid from draining down your tear duct. If you are using more than one drop in the same eye, repeat the process with about 5 minutes between drops. Repeat the process in your other eye if directed to do so by your doctor.


What should I avoid while taking Optivar?

Do not use any eye drop that is discolored or has particles in it.

Do not wear contact lenses during treatment with Optivar ophthalmic if your eyes are red, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. If you wear soft contact lenses, and your eyes are not red, wait at least 10 minutes after using Optivar ophthalmic before inserting your contact lenses.

Do not use other eye medications during treatment with Optivar ophthalmic without first talking to your doctor.


What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Optivar?

No significant interactions with Optivar have been reported at this time. If while taking Optivar, you develop any allergic reaction, such as hives, itchiness, or trouble breathing, it is important to contact your doctor immediately. Avoid another dose until speaking with your doctor.


What are the possible side effects of Optivar?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: bitter taste, headache, temporary eye burning or stinging


Can I receive Optivar if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The possibility of harm to a developing baby has not been completely ruled out. Before using Optivar, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

It is not known whether Optivar appears in breast milk. If you plan to breastfeed, discuss your medication options with your doctor.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Optivar?

If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of Optivar.

Store upright at room temperature. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
