What is OsmoPrep?

OsmoPrep is used for cleaning the colon to prepare for a colonoscopy in adults 18 years or older.

What is the most important information I should know about OsmoPrep?

OsmoPrep may cause a fluid imbalance if too much is taken, leading to dehydration.

Laxatives and purgatives (including OsmoPrep) have the potential for abuse by bulimia nervosa patients who frequently binge eat and vomit.

Who should not take OsmoPrep?

Do not take OsmoPrep if you have heart disease/problems, liver or kidney problems, or if you have severe chronic constipation, bowel perforation, colitis, or you have a known allergy to OsmoPrep or to any of its ingredients.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of OsmoPrep?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking to avoid a potential problem with OsmoPrep. Also, discuss your medical history with your doctor, especially if you have seizures, electrolyte imbalances (high phosphate or sodium levels in your blood, or low calcium or potassium levels in your blood), or heart, liver, kidney, or digestive problems.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

The recommended dose of OsmoPrep is 32 tablets (48 grams of sodium phosphate) taken by mouth with a total of 2 quarts of clear liquids (such as water, apple juice, ginger ale, lemonade) in the following manner:

The evening before the colonoscopy procedure: Take 4 OsmoPrep Tablets with 8 ounces of clear liquids every 15 minutes for a total of 20 tablets.

On the day of the colonoscopy procedure: Starting 3-5 hours before the procedure, take 4 OsmoPrep Tablets with 8 ounces of clear liquids every 15 minutes for a total of 12 tablets.

How should I take OsmoPrep?

You should drink 8 ounces of clear liquids with each 4-tablet dose of OsmoPrep. Patients should take a total of 2 quarts of clear liquids with OsmoPrep. If you do not take in enough of clear liquids before, during, and after using OsmoPrep, you may experience fluid loss and dehydration.

What should I avoid while taking OsmoPrep?

Patients should not use OsmoPrep for colon cleansing within seven days of previous administration.

No additional enema or laxative is required, and patients should be advised not to take additional agents.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with OsmoPrep?

What are the possible side effects of OsmoPrep?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Can I receive OsmoPrep if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

It is not known if OsmoPrep has any effect on pregnancy or nursing. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are nursing, talk to your doctor before taking OsmoPrep.

How should I store OsmoPrep?

Store at room temperature. Discard any unused portion.
