What is Peridex?
Return to topPeridex reduces bacteria in the mouth. It is an oral rinse used to treat gingivitis, a condition in which the gums become red and swollen, between dental visits. Peridex is also used to control gum bleeding caused by gingivitis.
What is the most important information I should know about Peridex?
Return to topPeridex may stain front-tooth fillings, especially those with a rough surface. These stains have no adverse effect on the gums, and usually can be removed by a professional cleaning. In addition to staining, Peridex can also cause an excess of tartar build-up on your teeth. It is recommended that you have your teeth cleaned at least every 6 months.
If you have both gingivitis and periodontitis (disease of the tissue that supports and attaches the teeth), remember that Peridex is used only for gingivitis. Periodontitis may require additional treatment by your doctor or dentist.
The use of Peridex may leave a bitter after-taste. Do not rinse with water or other mouthwashes after rinsing with Peridex solution. Make sure to use Peridex after you brush your teeth. Do not swallow the solution.

What is the usual dosage?
Return to topThe information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.
Adults: The usual dose of undiluted Peridex is 15 milliliters (one-half fluid ounce or one tablespoon) taken twice daily, morning and evening after brushing your teeth. Rinse with Peridex for approximately 30 seconds after brushing your teeth. Spit Peridex out after rinsing. You should never swallow Peridex.
Children: The safety and effectiveness of Peridex have not been established in children less than 18 years of age.
How should I take Peridex?
Return to topYou should get a thorough dental cleaning and examination before beginning treatment with Peridex. It is recommended that you have your teeth cleaned at least every 6 months.
After brushing, thoroughly rinsing, and flossing your teeth, rinse with Peridex by swishing one-half fluid ounce (marked in the cap) in your mouth for 30 seconds, and then spit it out. Do not swallow the mouthwash. Do not dilute Peridex and do not rinse your mouth with water or other mouthwashes after using Peridex, even if it leaves an unpleasant taste. Also, avoid eating or drinking for at least 1 hour to allow the medication to continue to work.
What should I avoid while taking Peridex?

While you are using Peridex, avoid other mouthwashes or rinses unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Avoid swallowing Peridex solution.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Peridex?
Return to topIf you miss a dose of Peridex Solution, use it as soon as possible following proper procedure (see "How should I take this medication?"). If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
How should I store Peridex?
Return to topStore Peridex Solution at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Do not freeze. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Peridex Solution out of the reach of children.
