What is Semprex-D?

Semprex-D is an antihistamine and decongestant drug that relieves sneezing, running nose, itching, watery eyes, and stuffy nose caused by seasonal allergies such as hay fever.

What is the most important information I should know about Semprex-D?

Antihistamines are more likely to cause dizziness, extreme calm (sedation), bladder obstruction, and low blood pressure in adults >60 years. Older adults are also more likely to have more side effects from the decongestant (pseudoephedrine) in Semprex-D.

Who should not take Semprex-D?

You should not take Semprex-D if you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to other antihistamines, pseudoephedrine, acrivastine, similar drugs, or any other ingredient of Semprex-D.

Avoid using Semprex-D if you have extremely high blood pressure or severe heart problems.

Do not take Semprex-D within 14 days of taking any drug known as an MAO inhibitor.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Semprex-D?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Semprex-D. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, peptic ulcer or other stomach problems, an enlarged prostate gland, increased eye pressure, an overactive thyroid gland, or kidney disease.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults and children ≥12 years: The usual dose for is 1 capsule, taken by mouth, every 4 to 6 hours, 4 times a day.

The safety and effectiveness of Semprex-D in children <12 years old has not been established.

How should I take Semprex-D?

Take Semprex-D exactly as prescribed by your doctor at regularly spaced intervals. Do not take more of Semprex-D or use it more often than your doctor recommends.

What should I avoid while taking Semprex-D?

Semprex-D may cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate dangerous machinery or participate in any activity that requires full mental alertness until you know how your body will react to Semprex-D.

Avoid the use of alcoholic beverages while taking Semprex-D.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Semprex-D?

If Semprex-D is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Semprex-D with the following: alcohol, antihistamines, blood pressure medications, decongestants, MAO inhibitors,

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: cough, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, indigestion, menstrual problems, nausea, nervousness, skin eruptions, sleeplessness, sore throat, weakness, wheezing

Can I receive Semprex-D if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of Semprex-D during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. One of the ingredients of Semprex-D, pseudoephedrine, does pass into human breast milk so your doctor will let you know if you should take this medication while breastfeeding.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Semprex-D?

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time.
