What is Silvadene?

Silvadene Cream 1% is a cream to be applied to the skin. Silvadene is used along with other medications to prevent and treat wound infections in people with second- and third-degree burns. It is effective against a variety of bacteria and yeast.

What is the most important information I should know about Silvadene?

Silvadene is a sulfa derivative. If burn wounds cover extensive areas of the body, Silvadene may be absorbed into the bloodstream. If you have ever had an allergic reaction to sulfa drugs, this could lead to a similar reaction. Make sure your doctor is aware of any drug reactions you have experienced.

There is a small chance of fungal infection when using Silvadene.

Who should not take Silvadene?

You should not use Silvadene if you are allergic to sulfa drugs.

Do not use Silvadene at the end of pregnancy, on premature infants, or on newborn infants during the first two months of life.

What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Silvadene?

Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medication you are taking before beginning treatment with Silvadene. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have blood problems, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, porphyria, liver disease, or kidney disease.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults: Apply Silvadene Cream 1% to the affected area once or twice daily to a thickness of one-sixteenth of an inch. Treatment with Silvadene should be continued until your doctor is satisfied that healing has occurred or determines that the burn site is ready for grafting.

Children: The safety and effectiveness of Silvadene in children has not been established.

How should I take Silvadene?

Silvadene cream is for external use only. Clean your skin and apply Silvadene with a sterile, gloved hand. Apply a thin layer (about one-sixteenth of an inch) to the affected area.

Continue using Silvadene Cream until the area has healed or is ready for skin grafting.

What should I avoid while taking Silvadene?

Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial ultraviolet light (e.g. sunlamps). Avoid getting Silvadene topical in the eyes.

What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Silvadene?

If Silvadene is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Silvadene with the following:

Topical enzyme preparations that contain collagenase, papain, or sutilains

What are the possible side effects of Silvadene?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.

Side effects may include: Areas of dead skin, burning sensation, red and raised rash on the body, skin discoloration

Can I receive Silvadene if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

The effects of Silvadene during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

How should I store Silvadene?

Silvadene can be stored at room temperature.
