What is Taclonex?
Return to topTaclonex™ ointment is used on the skin to treat psoriasis in adults. It contains a strong corticosteroid (betamethasone) and a drug that is somewhat similar to vitamin D (calcipotriene hydrate).
What is the most important information I should know about Taclonex?
Return to topTaclonex can pass through your skin and possibly cause serious side effects if you use too much or use it for too long. Serious side effects may include adrenal gland problems or having too much calcium in your blood. The doctor may order special blood and urine tests to check your calcium levels and adrenal gland function while you are using Taclonex.
Do not apply Taclonex to your face, eyes, groin, or arm pit region. Also, do no apply Taclonex to areas where the skin appears to be thinning or peeling (skin atrophy).
Taclonex is not recommended for use in children. It has not been studied in people less than 18 years old.
Who should not take Taclonex?
Return to topDo not use Taclonex if you have a calcium metabolism disorder, or if you have erythrodermic psoriasis, exfoliative psoriasis, or pustular psoriasis. Also, you should not use Taclonex if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.
What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of Taclonex?
Return to topTell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with Taclonex. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you are taking any other corticosteroids or have a skin infection, which should be treated before you start using this medication. Also tell your doctor if you are receiving phototherapy for your psoriasis or if you have thin skin (atrophy) at the site that needs to be treated.
What is the usual dosage?
Return to topThe information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.
Adults: Apply Taclonex™ ointment once a day to the areas of your skin affected by psoriasis. This medication is recommended for up to 4 weeks of treatment. Do not use it for more than 4 weeks unless prescribed by your doctor.
How should I take Taclonex?
Return to topUse Taclonex exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use more than the maximum recommended weekly amount of 100 grams. Wash your hands well after using Taclonex.
Apply the ointment only on areas affected by psoriasis. Do not apply it to your face, armpits, or groin area. If you accidentally get the medication on your face or in your eyes, wash the area with water right away.
What should I avoid while taking Taclonex?
Return to topAvoid spending a long time in sunlight, and also avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. Use sunscreen and wear a hat when you are outside. Talk to your doctor if you get a sunburn.
What are possible food and drug interactions associated with Taclonex?
Return to topIf Taclonex is used with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining it with other psoriasis treatments or a corticosteroid.
What are the possible side effects of Taclonex?
Return to topSide effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking this drug.
Common side effects may include: itching, rash, skin burning
Other side effects may include: change in skin color at the site of application, inflamed hair pores (folliculitis), psoriasis, skin irritation or redness, thinning of the skin (atrophy), swollen fine blood vessels (makes the skin look red)
Serious side effects are more likely to happen if you use too much Taclonex, use it for too long, or use it with other topical medicines that contain corticosteroids, calcipotriene, or certain other ingredients.
Can I receive Taclonex if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
Return to topUse this medication with caution if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, since the effects of Taclonex have not been studied in pregnant or nursing women. Before using this medication, let your doctor know if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding
