Tessalon is used for treating a cough. It works by reducing the reflex in the lungs that causes the urge to cough.

Tessalon should be swallowed whole, not chewed, sucked, or dissolved in your mouth. Doing these may cause numbness in your mouth and throat or may cause choking or a severe allergic reaction.

What is the usual dosage?

The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor's approval.

Adults and children over 10 years old: The usual dose is 100 milligrams (mg) or 200 mg 3 times per day, as needed. The maximum dose is 600 mg a day.

Tessalon perles (soft capsule form) should be swallowed whole. If chewed, they can produce a temporary numbness of the mouth and throat that may cause choking or a severe allergic reaction.

Side effects may include: allergic reactions, burning sensation in the eyes, confusion, constipation, dizziness, extreme calm (sedation), feeling cold, headache, itching, nausea, numbness in the chest, skin eruptions, stuffy nose, upset stomach, visual hallucinations

The effects of Tessalon during pregnancy and breastfeeding are unknown. Tell your doctor immediately if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.


What should I do if I miss a dose of Tessalon?

Take the forgotten dose of Tessalon as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for you next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take two doses at once.
